Mercedes-Benz 190 SL W121 — 1958

A wonderful example of the Mercedes 190SL W121, finished in elegant Hellblau Metallic with a new dark blue cabriolet roof and matching blue interior. This truly stands out as one of the most attractive colour combinations available and never fails to turn heads on the road. Adding to its desirability, it is a matching-numbers car.

Description

This 190SL was purchased by the current Mercedes enthusiast in 2010, shortly after it had received a full renovation including bodywork, repaint, and an overhaul of the engine and drivetrain. Since then, it has been the jewel of his collection. Under his ownership, additional work was carried out to raise the car to an even higher standard, including rechromed bumpers, a new cabriolet roof (with protective fabric covers still in place over the plastic windows), exhaust refitting, carburetor renovation, and regular servicing—exactly the kind of ongoing maintenance a car of this caliber deserves.

Unfortunately, the car is now being sold due to the owner’s illness. It was last properly driven in 2023 and has always been stored in a warm garage. We have checked it over, and everything functions as it should—the car runs and drives very well. We would only recommend a routine service, as the last one was carried out a few years ago.

Some paperwork for work completed under current ownership is included, though older documents have not been found. Online records confirm it was Swedish-sold and re-registered in 1990, with a total of seven registered owners. Its earlier history is unclear, as it appears to have dropped out of the Swedish registration system sometime before the early 1970s. Importantly, all identification numbers match, including body, chassis, and engine (see pictures).

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The car starts easily with a little choke and, once warmed up, the engine runs smoothly and evenly. It is very easy to drive, with a direct gearshift, strong brakes, and a well-balanced feel on the road. The engine bay is clean and well kept, while the wheels and hubcaps present nicely with good older tires. The car is inspected and ready to be enjoyed straight away, with only a routine service recommended.

  • Interior condition:

Interior remains in excellent condition, even though it was reupholstered and renovated over 15 years ago. It features blue seats with matching door cards and dashboard pad, all very well kept, along with blue and grey carpets in fine condition. As mentioned, the roof is new, meaning the headliner is perfect, and the top fits properly and is easy to open and close. The dashboard and instrumentation are also in top condition, with no cracks on the steering wheel. Overall, there is very little to fault with the interior.

  • Exterior condition:

The car presents itself extremely well, especially in this rare colour combination—most 190SLs are seen in red, white, or black, making this example even more attractive. The bodywork is straight with no damage or rust, and the panels and gaps fit nicely. The underbody is very clean and tidy, with only small signs of older welding repairs and no rust or damage.

The paintwork gleams in the sunlight, with nothing immediately noticeable. On closer inspection, there are a few very minor details: a small touch-up near the bonnet, two micro-blisters (front left and rear wing), and a light scratch on the rear left wing near the bumper (see pictures). The only point requiring attention is the boot lid lock, which needs adjustment to close properly.

  • General condition:

This is an ideal car for an enthusiast or collector looking for something special. Renovating a 190SL is both costly and time-consuming, but here you are buying an example that can be enjoyed for many years to come with only routine maintenance.
