Volvo 244 GL 2.3 — 1989

A lively 35-year-old car that has been off the road for a few years now wants to hit the streets again. As a tax-exempt vehicle, it just needs a few simple measures and an inspection to become roadworthy.

"The car runs well and is in reasonable usable condition. It has many new parts installed but needs a general inspection and an official vehicle check."

Description

The car was purchased in 2014 as a project to restore. Many parts were acquired, including new front and rear lights, a half exhaust system, a timing belt replacement, new tires, and a Volvo service. In 2017, the project was halted, and the car was left in the garage, although it was started and warmed up occasionally. It now needs someone to take care of it and get it back on the road.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The car starts and runs well but has been off the road since 2017. At that time, the timing belt, front discs, half exhaust system, and a service were all done. The brakes are somewhat sticky but still functional; they will need to be checked.

  • Interior condition:

The interior is in reasonable condition. The rear seat has been replaced at some point, but the owner has acquired one with original upholstery, which is included. The left door pocket is broken.

  • Exterior condition:

The paint on the car is in decent condition, with a scratch and a few small dents on the right side, as well as some door dings on the left side. It has new tires on alloy wheels, which should be checked as they are leaking a bit of air. New lighting is installed both front and rear. There is some rust at the rear edges of the sills on both sides.

  • General condition:

A straightforward project to restore and get back on the road.

Facts about the model

The Volvo 240 was a further development of the Volvo 140, introduced in 1974. The early models of the Volvo 240 clearly showed design elements from the Volvo VESC concept car, especially in the front. The 240 series (including the Volvo 260) achieved significant sales success and became Volvo’s most-produced model series, with around 2.8 million units made. It was divided, like its predecessor, into 242 (two-door version), 244 (four-door version), and 245 (wagon model). These designations were dropped for the 1983 model year, with all versions officially being called 240. However, these designations are still used colloquially to specify the body type. The wagon variant, commonly referred to as the Volvo 245, was popular among Swedish families for many years, offering ample space for strollers, camping gear, etc. In the 1980 film Vi hade i alla fall tur med vädret, the main characters travel in a period-typical Volvo 245.

Over the years, the Volvo 240 underwent several changes, including multiple updates to the front design, with the most significant change occurring with the 1981 model year, which introduced a completely new front and interior. The Volvo 240 has achieved cult status as the quintessential Volvo and a family car. It was long Sweden’s most common car and, as of 2011, was still relatively common on the roads, especially compared to other competing models from the same era.
