"It’s not the finest, it’s not the most well-maintained, and it’s not the most pristine – but it’s one of the toughest."

Description

It was delivered to its first owner, merchant Åke Fordahl in Visby, in August 1962. Five years later, in 1967, Allan Törnvall purchased the car from Wennerdals Bil AB in Visby. The couple drove the car daily until their son found it too cramped and uncomfortable sitting on the plank behind the seats, which was sometime in the early 1970s. After that, the Mercedes became a hobby car. It has been on jack stands for many years but has also been started regularly. The last inspection was on 1994-07-19, but it’s not entirely clear how long it has been on the stands.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The engine has not been started during the documentation, but it has been run regularly during its time in storage. A thorough inspection and service are, of course, needed, as well as a check of the brakes.

  • Interior condition:

Original beige vinyl upholstery on the seats, with the owner using seat covers for many years. The driver’s seat has a split in the seam on the seat cushion. Otherwise, the dashboard is in good condition, featuring a stylish, period-correct Becker Europa radio, though its functionality is unknown.

  • Exterior condition:

It received a new coat of paint in its original color sometime in the 1970s. Today, it has a patinated exterior with both scratches and slightly faded paint. If a buyer chooses to keep it in this condition, they will certainly stand out at gatherings; there are many perfectly restored and flawless 190 SLs, but very few that carry their provenance and history in a more rugged, used state. Underneath, a repair is visible on the left side of the floor. The trunk has surface rust from moisture under the rubber mat, which can be easily addressed.
