Description

Delivered new in Sweden in 1957, this car has a colorful and active history within Swedish youth car culture. It was part of Stockholm’s genuine raggar scene in the 1960s and 1970s, with owners like Bubben, Kjelle, and the well-known drag racing brothers Lantz. The car was used for European trips and was briefly modified into a street racer with a big block engine and cut-out rear wheel arches. It also served as transport for a criminal gang in the early 1960s. In the early 1990s, it came into the hands of Ola Berg in Halmstad, who restored and renovated it around 1998, painting it in white/turquoise instead of the original red/white. The current owner in Klintehamn, Gotland, purchased it in 2017 and has driven it lightly each summer since. The last approved inspection was on 2017-08-07.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

A 312 Y-block (5.1 liters) engine, as in the original, sounds right and healthy. The gear selector is reversed, a remnant from when it had a floor-mounted shifter and two seats. This can be fixed; it involves replacing an external mechanical part on the transmission. There is a slight leak of transmission oil when stationary.

  • Interior condition:

The interior, renovated in the 1990s, is tidy. The power window in the driver’s door operates a bit slowly, and the door handle on the same door is loose due to a missing pin.

  • Exterior condition:

The older, attractive paint is in a period-typical color combination for the model year. The electric soft top works well, and the top fabric is clean and intact. The car was originally red/white and has also been red and red/black over the years. An old photo from a site called Aspes Bilder is included, showing it as red in the early 1970s when it was owned by a man known as Bubben.

  • General condition:

The car’s pleasant condition and its history in Swedish original “raggarkultur” (car culture) add significant emotional value and provenance. While there are many imported 1950s cars in the country, a vehicle that carries part of the foundation of the fascinating Swedish Americana scene—along with its various subcultures—is truly something special.
