Description

It was registered for traffic in May 1982. The first owner is said to have been a well-known photographer in Helsingborg. A relative inherited the car 28 years later, drove it for a couple of years and then it stood idle in a barn for 15 years, until the current owner took over the project through a spontaneous purchase this year. The realization of the limited hours in a day came later, and the ambition must now pass to new hands. The latest approved inspection was carried out on 2013-08-27.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The engine starts, but has a cracked head or blown gasket. There is compression in the coolant. Otherwise the engine, gearbox and clutch worked well during the initial test run that revealed the head defect.

  • Interior condition

Complete interior. Good headliner and door panels. Unstretched fabric, dry upholstery and possible sun shades. Nice instrument panel, steering wheel and controls. A bit owner-modified with a lamp construction that illuminates over the CB radio and an extra older radio.

  • Exterior condition

Rusty screens and dog bones at the rear, but the undercarriage actually looks good. The bodywork's degree of corrosion is therefore a decisive factor in determining whether this is a good example of a Golf 1.

  • General condition

A salvageable project. A complete Golf 1 to renovate for the future. It does not pay off today, but likely will tomorrow.

Facts about the model

The Volkswagen Golf first generation was launched in 1974 and marked a completely new era for Volkswagen as a modern, eagerly anticipated replacement for the outdated Type 1. The Golf was designed by Italian designer Giorgetto Giugiaro, who gave it its characteristic, angular lines and a practical hatchback body. Unlike its predecessor, the Golf was equipped with a modern water-cooled engine mounted transversely at the front and front-wheel drive according to a modern and proven formula, which maximized interior space despite the car's compact dimensions. The model became an immediate sales success worldwide and turned the car manufacturer's precarious finances into great profit. In 1976, the legendary sports version Golf GTI was launched with a fuel-injected engine and sportier chassis, which in practice created an entirely new car class for fast small cars, in English hot hatches, in Swedish the GTI class. That same year, a popular diesel version was also introduced, and later both the sedan version Jetta and a cabriolet followed. European production of the first generation ended in 1983 when the second generation took over, but the model was so beloved that production under the name Citi Golf continued in South Africa until 2009.
