"A charming example with a fine history, in complete condition, with a solid dose of Swedish folkhem spirit."

Description

The current owner was driven home from the maternity ward in this car in 1949. She later took over ownership from her father in May 1976 (a few years earlier it had been registered in her mother’s name, although she did not have a driver’s license). According to records, the car was first collected in Östersund in 1948, after which it was registered in Stockholm. Following a move to Ångermanland, it was then registered in Västernorrland, and in 1961, when the family moved back to Stockholm, it once again received an A-plate. During the re-registration in 1972–73, it was given its current license plate.

When the daughter took over the car, she drove it for a while, but it was then laid up. The last inspection was in July 1981. The car has not been driven for many years and is now standing on blocks in a “garage tent” in the owner’s garden. Included with the car are various documents, the owner’s manual, keys, and some spare parts.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The car appears complete but has not been driven for about 40 years. The engine does not turn over.
It has not been inspected on a lift, and rust could be seen, but the first owner rustproofed the car with, among other things, asphalt, so it should have been relatively well preserved.

  • Interior condition:

Pleasant original interior. Three layers of seat covers have been fitted over the years. The driver’s seat backrest has been carefully uncovered, and the upholstery underneath is in nicely preserved original condition. Whether the rest is equally well preserved underneath is uncertain, but hopefully so. Steering wheel, controls, gauges, and dashboard are in good condition considering the age, mileage, and storage. Headliner and floor mats are also in good condition.

  • Exterior condition:

Reportedly repainted sometime in the 1960s. Otherwise in good and complete condition. Comes with a “classic gangster cap” and hubcaps.

  • General condition:

A folkhem classic now waiting to be awakened from its Sleeping Beauty slumber. Whether a “barn find” recommissioning or a full restoration is chosen is, of course, up to the new owner – but either way, this is a car with iconic status: a Swedish classic and a vehicle of motoring historical interest.

Facts about the model

The PV 444 is a classic Volvo that has filled countless pages of automotive history. It was first unveiled at Volvo’s exhibition in the Royal Tennis Hall on September 1, 1944. Many already sensed that the Second World War would soon be over, and Volvo wanted to be ready to go when peace finally arrived. However, it would take until early 1947 before deliveries of the car could actually begin. Various obstacles and delays arose, not least the shortage of raw materials during and after the war.

It has also been written that Volvo ended up selling the car at a loss in the beginning, as many orders had been placed at the introductory price set back in 1944, which quickly proved to be too low. Nevertheless, the wheels started turning, and the 444 found its way onto the roads. And not only onto Swedish roads – with this new family car Volvo also kickstarted exports, primarily to neighboring countries, but eventually also to Europe, the USA, and the rest of the world.

A total of 196,005 examples were produced before the model was discontinued. By then, the new Amazon had already been launched in 1957, and the following year the 444 was upgraded to the 544 model.
