"A convertible in a presentable and pleasant driving condition."

Description

This Golf was imported from Germany and has been owned within the same family for many years. The current owner took it over from his father. During the family’s ownership, the Golf has only been used as a summer car, mainly for leisure drives and trips to and from various events.

The car has not required major maintenance, but it has received a new stainless steel exhaust system built by Uppsala Avgasteknik, the rear brakes have been refurbished with new wheel cylinders and brake shoes, the timing belt was replaced about three years ago, and it got a new battery a couple of years back. The Golf is in good usable condition and works as it should – perfect for late summer outings and trips.

The odometer shows just over 110,000 km, and this seems consistent with the car’s condition. Service book, not fully stamped, is included. One set of keys.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Runs well in engine and drivetrain. The car drives steadily on the road and the brakes work as they should. The clock’s LCD display is broken. Crack in the windshield (see photo).

  • Interior condition:

The interior is in normal condition for the car’s age and mileage. It shows signs of use and would benefit from an upholstery cleaning. The upper edges of the door panels have several cracks, and the inner lining of the soft top has some tears (see photos). The lever for the driver’s seat backrest adjustment is missing its plastic parts. The armrest on the passenger door is a bit loose.

  • Exterior condition:

It appears that the Golf still has its original paint, which is in decent condition without major damage, though there are signs of use such as a few small door dings and scratches. The car’s underbody appears to be in good condition.

  • General condition:

A Golf Cabriolet in normal driving condition for its age and mileage. Runs well and is ready to drive. A pleasant car.

Facts about the model

A convertible version of the Golf was presented to Volkswagen’s management by coachbuilder Wilhelm Karmann as early as 1976. This early prototype lacked the later model’s roll-over bar and had a flatter rear body line where the soft top folded down.

The production model of the convertible was designated Type 155. In Europe and Canada it was called the Golf Cabriolet, while in the USA it was sold as the Rabbit Convertible up until the 1985 model year. When the Rabbit was replaced by the Golf II in the USA, the Mk1 Cabriolet was renamed “Volkswagen Cabriolet.”

The Cabriolet was produced between 1980 and 1994. The body was reinforced and featured a transverse roll-over bar. Final assembly of the Mk1 Cabriolet was carried out entirely at Karmann’s factory. Volkswagen supplied the engines, suspension, and interior to Karmann. The soft top was made of vinyl or fabric and was insulated, with a heated glass rear window. It was manually operated until 1991, when it became electrically powered.
