"Surprisingly, the MGA was also available as a coupé, but this type of car is synonymous with a charming and modestly weather-protecting soft top or a flapping cockpit cover. And it is with the latter fastened, half open, that the car is best experienced."

Description

Delivered new to its first Swedish owner in November 1956. One might assume that there was some winter driving with the hardtop back then, though likely with limited frequency considering the seemingly fine original condition of the body. The current owner bought the car as early as 1975, and since then it has been used carefully and sparingly, yet always with enthusiasm and joy every year. At some point, probably in the late 1970s, it received a new paint job, and it is highly likely that the total mileage is no more than what the odometer shows – just under 100,000 km. The most recent and last approved inspection was carried out on 2017-05-22.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The engine has recently been rebuilt and has not run far since. The owner mostly used his cars locally and only in good weather. The engine bay is neat and tidy, having also received attention during the engine overhaul. The engine may be running a bit rich; it responds weakly to the choke and has a slightly uneven idle. A new owner will need to adjust and do some fine tuning of the carburetors. The gearbox is as it should be – a bit stiff with a distinct gear feel – and the chassis feels good in motion. The speedometer starts to fluctuate slightly above 80 km/h, and the trip meter is non-functional.

  • Interior condition:

Attractive interior with leather seats in used original condition. With today’s techniques, it is easy to condition, clean, repair, and re-dye older leather seats. Alternatively, they also carry a distinct charm as they are. The small damage on the driver’s seat cushion can be neatly repaired while leaving the rest of the patina intact, for example. Nice instrument panel with all correct controls and switches, and a stylish original steering wheel.

  • Exterior condition:

Older repaint in presentable and good condition, as are the soft top, frame, and cockpit cover. A hardtop is included with dry rubber seals. Tires without brand or markings but with a vintage Pirelli Cinturato tread pattern, mounted on nice wire wheels.

  • General condition:

Charming, attractively patinated, and user-friendly with a newly rebuilt engine. Also with good history and few owners.

Facts about the model

The MG MGA was introduced in 1955 as a replacement for the older T-series and quickly became one of the most stylish and sought-after sports cars of the 1950s. The 1957 model belongs to the first generation (produced 1955–1959) and is characterized by its low body with sweeping lines – a clear departure from the more angular MG models that came before.

In its standard version, it featured a 1489 cc inline-four engine producing 72 hp. The top speed was around 155 km/h, which was quite impressive for a small open sports car at the time. The MGA had a more modern chassis with independent front suspension and improved road handling compared to its predecessors.

The car was exported on a large scale, particularly to the USA, where it helped establish British roadsters as dream cars for sports car enthusiasts. The MGA was sold both as an open two-seater roadster and as a coupé, both showcasing classic British design language and a strong identity.

Today, the MGA is a highly valued classic, admired for its timeless design, mechanical simplicity, and pure driving experience. It remains a natural highlight at classic car gatherings and among collectors worldwide.
