"Nice to drive. A car that immediately conveys the right feeling."

Description

This very fine Mercedes-Benz 190 SL was owned by its previous keeper from 1994 until Christmas 2024. He was an automotive mechanic and a true vintage car enthusiast, with a particular passion for Mercedes vehicles. His boyhood dream was to own a Mercedes 190 SL, and when the opportunity arose, he seized it. The car was located near Sundsvall, not far to travel, and the dream came true when he became its owner.

In his hands, the car was restored to a very high standard. The restoration was carried out some years ago, which means the paint does not have the “fat” look, nor is everything overly glossy and soulless in the way more recent restorations sometimes appear. The car has been stored in a heated garage and used sparingly. It has participated locally in shows and veteran rallies within Sundsvalls Motorveteraner.

The Mercedes was transferred to the current owner, his daughter, at the end of 2024, and she drove it for the first time herself last year at the Classic Lady event in Sundsvall. The car is, as mentioned, in very good condition – well cared for and lightly used. A great opportunity for someone who wants a 190 SL in excellent, ready-to-drive condition.

Some documentation is included, such as inspection records, receipts, and the owner’s manual (see photos). The hardtop is also included, though it has some damage (see photos).

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Runs well in engine and drivetrain. At the time of photography, the Mercedes had not been started for a year, and it has a high idle that needs attention. The brakes engage evenly and effectively. All other equipment on the car functions as it should. One of the levers on the steering column is missing its knob (see photo).

  • Interior condition:

Very nice interior. The seat upholstery is of high quality with only minor signs of use (see photos). Good floor mats and an intact, well-preserved dashboard. Door panels are somewhat dirty. Luggage compartment and engine bay in good condition.

  • Exterior condition:

Older repaint in good condition. As it is older, it does not appear too “fat” or overly glossy. The soft top is in good condition and easy to raise and fold. The chrome overall is in fine condition, with a small damage on the left rear bumper guard (see photo). Hardtop with damage (see photos). The windshield has a crack on the left side (see photo). The car’s underbody looks good and appears to have been treated with underseal. The jack mounts are in good condition.

  • General condition:

A Mercedes 190 SL in very nice and solid condition. Place it in your collection or enjoy it as it is – you’ll be satisfied whichever you choose.

Facts about the model

The Mercedes-Benz 190 SL is a sports car that was produced between May 1955 and February 1963. It is often regarded as the little brother to the 300 SL, though in fact it was more closely related to the W120. The 1.9-liter engine, however, had its roots in the 300 SL.

The 190 SL was introduced together with its more celebrated sibling, the 300 SL, at the New York Auto Show in February 1954. While the 300 SL was a sports car developed from early 1950s racing cars, the 190 SL was built on a shortened chassis taken from the 180 family saloon. Mercedes-Benz aimed it at customers who wanted a more comfortable and reliable sports car, better suited for long-distance touring than the British and Italian competitors of the time.

With the 190 SL, Mercedes introduced a couple of innovations that would later benefit its more conventional family cars – for example, a modern four-cylinder overhead-valve engine with an overhead camshaft, and a single-joint swing axle that provided safer and more predictable handling characteristics.
