Porsche 928 var tänkt som ersättare till den ålderdomliga 911-modellen – och basen till 928 stod klar redan 1970. Jämfört med 911 var detta något betydligt modernare med V8 monterad under huven fram och växellådan långt bak för bästa viktfördelning. Jämfört med 911:an skulle den nya modell bli lättare, säkrare och även bekvämare. Formen skulle anknyta till de traditionella samtidigt som den andas framtid.
För att hålla vikten nere var bilen delvis tillverkad i aluminium. År 1978 utsågs Porsche 928 till Årets bil.
Tanken att Porsche 928 skulle ersätta Porsche 911 blev inte verklighet – 1995 lades tillverkningen av 928 ned, medan Porsche 911 fortfarande tillverkas.
