"Parked since 1986. Put it on, inspect it, and drive."

Description

This Saab 99 from the first model year, 1969, with a Triumph engine, is presented here in very nice condition. The family that owns the Saab has had it since 1986, and the car has been off the road and stored in a dry and warm place since then. It has only had three owners. The car was repainted in the early 1980s due to a scratch. At that time, it was inexpensive to paint cars, so it received a full repaint instead of just the area where the scratch was. According to the current owner, the Saab has never been welded for rust repair. No welds were observed during the inspection. All hydraulics have been refurbished, and the car has received new brake hoses. The tires are in poor condition and should be replaced.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The Saab runs well in terms of its engine and drivetrain. The brakes operate smoothly and evenly. However, the tires are in poor condition and should be replaced.

  • Interior condition:

The interior is generally in good condition. There are some minor damages, primarily on the door panels as shown in the pictures. The dashboard and headliner look good. The floor mats are intact but may be slightly stained. The upholstery in the trunk area is worn as shown in the picture.

  • Exterior condition:

The older repaint hasn’t seen much daylight since 1986. The paint job is somewhat dry-sprayed, where the color hasn’t flowed out properly. The body is straight, nice, and undamaged. Good panel fitment.

  • General condition:

A rare, intact, early, and pleasant Saab 99 in good used condition. A service and inspection may be in order as the car has been off the road since 1986.

Facts about the model

The Saab 99 was introduced as early as 1967, but production did not start until a year later, in 1969 model year. The Saab 99 was produced until 1984 when it was replaced by the short-lived model 90 and its successor, the 900, which was based on the 99.

Early Saab 99s were equipped with a 1.7-liter engine from Triumph. It was designed as a “shared” V8 from the larger Triumph cars. An interesting technical detail about the Triumph engine was that the same cam lobe controlled both the intake and exhaust valves. One valve was directly pushed down by the camshaft, and the other was controlled by a rocker arm. This system required both valves to have the same valve timing, which worked well. The same engine was also used in the later Triumph Dolomite. The British engineering firm Ricardo worked with Saab in the 1960s and connected Saab with Triumph, leading to the collaboration that provided the Saab 99 with Triumph’s 1.7-liter engine.
