"A vintage Volvo enthusiast with a curiosity for historic racing? This is a great entry level tool."

Description

The car was built in 2014 from a bare shell into a historic race car by racing veterans Ulf Granberg and Peggen Andersson, with the ambition of competing in historic endurance racing on the classic Nürburgring Nordschleife. Only one such race was (bareley) completed, a four-hour race in 2016, where a persistent ignition problem severely limited running time. The drivers on that occasion were Ulf Granberg, Mikael Granberg, and Peggen Andersson. The car was entered in another race that same year, the Danish Aarhus Classic Grand Prix, but the ignition issue plagued that event as well. Mikael Granberg returned to Aarhus with the car in 2019 after the electrical fault had been resolved, and the experience immediately became more enjoyable. A seventh place in qualifying out of 32 cars, followed by a sixth place in the weekend’s first heat, which was then backed up by two further top-ten finishes the same weekend. Since then, the car has not been raced. Today, it is primarily suitable for the G2 Touring Cars 1966–1971 class in historic racing and has an older FIA HTP (Historic Technical Passport), which therefore needs to be renewed.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The engine was built by Kenneths Motor in Motala, fed by Dellorto 48 DHLA carburetors and fitted with a slightly milder camshaft for this context, often referred to as a “rally cam.” This type of setup is better suited to the car’s intended career as an endurance racer. If one wishes to easily optimize the engine for shorter circuit races, it is straightforward to install a sharper and more aggressive camshaft. In its current specification, the engine produces around 175 hp, documented by dyno testing at Köhler Racing. The gearbox features a close-ratio gear set with standard synchromesh, and the rear axle is equipped with a plate-type limited-slip differential and a 4.10 final drive ratio. The suspension components are sand blasted and powder coated; the control arms were new and fitted with Powerflex bushings when the car was built. Bilstein shock absorbers are fitted, along with homologated, approved ventilated brake discs from the Volvo 164.

  • Interior condition

The seat and harnesses are dated from when the car was built in 2014, as is the large 75-liter fuel tank. The roll cage is welded and, of course, approved, and was installed when the car was still a bare shell.

  • Exterior condition

Original factory color, paint code Turquoise 104, finished in a neat and presentable condition. Peggen Andersson’s first race car from the 1980 season wore this exact color, which explains the choice of livery. Approved hood pins, towing straps, an external cut-off switch and all other required equipment in accordance with regulations are fitted. New, genuine Minilite wheels with Kumho R-compound tires.

  • General condition

A competitive interpretation of the Swedish people’s car, the Volvo 140, for historic racing— finished in a cheerful color, with cost-effective running and readily available spare parts.
