"Performs well and behaved normally. Robust and road-ready vehicle, we find nothing that requires immediate action. Only test driven by us on road, not off-road."

Description

This vehicle model is the progenitor of Volvo’s Cross Country model designation. This is a well-preserved example. The owner of this off-road vehicle bought it in January 2024 via Bilwebauctions. He is now selling the vehicle due to health reasons. This example of the Volvo C303 was manufactured for the Swedish army in 1975, when Sweden’s defense was at its largest and most expensive.

Since its transition to civilian ownership in 2005, the vehicle has had only 2 owners, including the current one. It has always been in traffic and inspected at prescribed intervals, and stored under a roof in an outbuilding. An interior and exterior cleaning of the vehicle would further enhance its appearance. Last approved by the vehicle inspection on 2023-08-10. Now exempt from periodic inspection and tax-exempt under the vintage car rules. One starter key is available. Instruction manual and logbook are included.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Straight-six B30 engine with dual carburetors, rated at 117 hp. 24-volt electrical system. Four-wheel drive with portal axles that provide extra high ground clearance. The carburetors underwent an overhaul with new gaskets in the summer of 2024. At the same time, the oil in the hub reductions was changed. New starting batteries in 2024. Surface-rusty muffler which likely needs to be replaced in the medium short term.

  • Interior condition:

Well-preserved interior. Hole in the driver's seat upholstery, as well as wear and older repairs on the other seats. See pictures. Complete in the rear cabin with folding chairs and cargo protection grid. The cover over the batteries is present and included. The red button for front-wheel drive has come loose in the holder on the dashboard. See picture.

  • Exterior condition:

Straight and fine in the body with only minor scrapes and a few small dents. The condition is well within the upper range for this type of vehicle. See pictures. Hand-painted body, as is common with former military vehicles. Good tires all around. Spare tire and tow cable in the right place. There is some surface rust on the underside, nothing serious. See pictures. A rust protection treatment is recommended.

  • General condition:

An unusually fine, untouched, and solid example that makes a good impression. After completing its service, it has been owned by elderly gentlemen who have driven it sparingly. As such, it has not been driven mercilessly by off-road enthusiasts, which is otherwise often the case with this type of vehicle.

Facts about the model

Swedish men who did their military service (basic training) at some point between 1960 and 2005 have most likely encountered Volvo's terrain vehicles. Since the 1950s with the "Suggan," Volvo has supplied all-terrain vehicles to the Swedish Defense Forces. There might still be an occasional camouflage-painted specimen of the Tgb 11 in active green service. This model was introduced in 1974, replacing the smaller "Valpen" with designation C202. In addition to the Terrain Vehicle 11, there were also Tgb 13 and Tgb 20, both later extended three-axle vehicles with six-wheel drive. The Tgb 11 was four-wheel drive and proved to be so durable and reliable that Volvo trucks began manufacturing civilian versions. Cross Country C303 was the civilian name of the model, where 30 stood for a 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder naturally aspirated engine, and 3 represented the vehicle's total weight of three tons. It was sold on the civilian market to clients including emergency services. When it was time to launch the Volvo V70 XC in 1997, Volvo cars had to buy out the Cross Country name from the truck company.
