"Swedish engineering from Trollhättan, combined with the relentless technical curiosity of a then 21-year-old prodigy, resulted in this unique formula car — raced for many years in the Swedish Historic Racing Cup."

Description

The Formula Junior car known as “Hackåsarn” was built by a then 21-year-old Mats Ragnarsson in Hackås, Jämtland. It features a tubular space frame and aluminum body panels. The 940 cc Saab engine is paired with a Volkswagen gearbox mounted upside down, which means the gear pattern is reversed. The drum brakes also come from Volkswagen.

Unlike the Saab Formula Junior — which was factory-built by the manufacturer — this is a rear-wheel-drive formula car. The car’s HTP papers are valid until December 31, 2029, and it is registered under the marque “Hackås” with chassis number MRS001, named after its builder, Mats Ragnarsson.

The current owner has restored the car and competed with it in the Racerhistoriska Cupen (Swedish Historic Racing Cup). It has been raced every season for many years, although in recent seasons, a friend of the owner has been the one behind the wheel.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Started and ran well at the time of documentation. The 940 cc engine is race-tuned but built with reliability in mind.

  • Interior condition:

A well-used but well-functioning Formula Junior car with an extra touch of character thanks to its Saab components. It features a Moto-Lita wooden steering wheel and Saab instrumentation.

  • Exterior condition:

The aluminum body shows patina — or “race-battled,” if you prefer. The hood latches wouldn’t quite stay in place, so duct tape has been used to keep them secured.

  • General condition:

The word unique should be used only when it truly applies — and in this case, it certainly does. This Formula Junior car, built by a young man in Jämtland who embraced the concept of the then-new and exciting racing class, is genuinely one of a kind. The dents and scratches on its body only add to the charm and the story surrounding this car.

Hackåsarn’s HTP papers remain valid for more than four years, so now it’s time for a new owner to continue the story of this remarkable machine — in action on the racetrack.

Owner's comment

It’s an incredibly fun car to drive — it draws a lot of attention whenever you take it out, if nothing else for the smoke and the sound. I’ve raced it in the Racerhistoriska Cupen and gradually moved on to slightly more modern cars. I handed over the racing to a friend, who’s been free to enter the events he’s wanted to. He’s been driving it for about five or six years now, mainly at Gelleråsen, but also at Falkenberg and Knutstorp. So, it’s been kept in regular use every year since we got it running again.

Facts about the model

The first race in the Formula Junior class was held in Italy in 1958. The category later became the only junior single-seater class below Formula 1 when Formula 2 and Formula 3 were discontinued in the early 1960s. Among the manufacturers were Cooper, Lotus, and Saab, the latter having built two front-wheel-drive Formula Junior cars.

In the small Jämtland village of Hackås, a Formula Junior car was also built — powered by a Saab engine. Its creator, Mats Ragnarsson, was a true technical polymath who made his own spark plugs, restored vintage cars, and even built working scale models of a V12 Merlin engine and a radial aircraft engine.

In 1960, Ragnarsson took a two-stroke engine from a Saab 93 and constructed his own Formula Junior car. He recalls that he never drew any plans and didn’t even have a proper garage — the car was partly built under open skies. It received a tubular space frame chassis, and the body was hand-formed from aluminum panels. He fitted it with studded ice tires and drove it on frozen lakes, though never in official races. Later, the Saab engine was replaced by a 1,000 cc BMC engine, and after a few years, Ragnarsson sold the car.

Many years later, the current owner acquired the Formula Junior car — now known as Hackåsarn — as a restoration project. It once again received a Saab two-stroke engine, built by Tim Bishop in collaboration with Ströms Trimningsservice in Trollhättan.
