"This car was in excellent condition when it was acquired by the current owner a year ago. However, the owner decided to arrange an upgrade in line with the "wish list" from his younger years regarding Amazons. Everything has been installed and works well, but it now needs some final touches to "cross the finish line.""

Description

This car was registered for traffic in Sweden on September 19, 1968. It has had a total of seven owners, several of whom were Volvo enthusiasts. About 30 years ago, the car underwent a restoration that included new front fenders and a fresh paint job. There were no rust issues in critical areas such as the trunk, spare wheel well, inner wheel housings, or sills. The car has been consistently well-maintained and remains in good condition.

The current owner acquired the car a year ago. Since then, he has replaced the battery, steering box, installed dual SU carburetors, swapped the gearbox, and added an overdrive. Additionally, new 5 1/2-inch wheels and tires were installed, along with a stainless steel 2-inch exhaust system, all in keeping with the styling trends of his youth. Parts such as the single carburetor and original gearbox can be included if desired. The car comes with the owner’s manual, workshop manual, and various receipts and inspection records. It has passed inspection and is ready to drive.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The car starts easily and performs excellently in terms of engine and drivetrain. However, the dual carburetors need a review and fine-tuning. The same goes for the Overdrive function, which has a new solenoid but is still acting up. During a calm test drive in a residential area, the car felt stable and easy to drive. Not checked on a lift, but the underside shows no signs of significant corrosion issues.

  • Interior condition:

Pleasant and nice interior in beige (430-595). Good chairs and seats, door panels and other panels as well as the ceiling and rubber mats. There are some minor scuffs and mild signs of wear, and the padding in the chairs is softer in some places. The steering wheel, controls, and instruments are in good condition and everything appears to be functioning (the horn function is uncertain) with the upper part of the dashboard reupholstered.

  • Exterior condition:

Fine and shiny cherry red (46) paintwork that has held up very well after the repaint. Glass, gloss, rubber, emblems, and lighting details are in well-preserved condition for their age and mileage. Overdrive emblem from the earlier version. Nice and period-typical Marchal (spotlight/cornering light) with Volvo protection. Engine and luggage compartments in good condition.

  • General condition:

A Volvo Amazon B20 equipped with nice period-appropriate accessories in good condition is always a sought-after vehicle. It's been just over 55 years since it began its journey, but it has weathered the years splendidly, receiving care and maintenance, which is why it is now a fine classic and enthusiast car for those seeking nostalgia from the joyful 1960s.

Facts about the model

There has certainly been a vast amount written about the Amazon, one of our most cherished classic cars. Designed by Jan Wilsgaard with Italian influences, the Amazon was Volvo’s answer to the so-called pontoon body, a hallmark of the 1950s. It was manufactured from 1956 to 1970, covering model years 1957–1970. For the 1959 model year, it became the world’s first mass-produced car to feature a three-point seatbelt as standard in the front seats.

The bulletproof B18 engine, producing 75 hp, was introduced for the 1962 model year. In 1965, the Amazon received several updates, including a new grille, new seats and interior, as well as hollow wheels and new hubcaps.

For the 1969 model year, a larger engine, the B20A, was introduced, offering 2.0 liters and 82 hp DIN in the standard 121 model. The brakes were improved for greater safety, and several upgrades from the 140 series were incorporated. However, there were also some reductions, such as the removal of the chrome drip moldings and hood strip. No major changes or developmental steps were introduced in the final production years. New colors were introduced in 1969, such as Medium Blue, from the 140 series.

When the 1970s arrived, the Amazon was retired after 14 model years and 667,332 units produced. Available as a two-, four-, or five-door version, ranging from standard to Sport and GT models, the Amazon remains a Swedish icon and a key part of automotive history.
