"An unusual Volvo Amazon pickup, converted over 30 years ago to a good standard. In good running and driving condition, with some cosmetic improvements to consider over time."

Description

This Swedish-sold Volvo Amazon was first registered in 1966 as an Amazon estate and has had six owners in total. The previous two owners were friends and, between them, kept the car for approximately 40 years. The former owner purchased it in 1987 and worked at a technical school, where he converted the Amazon into a pickup and had it officially registered as such. With help from the school's woodworking department, several custom-made wooden trims and details were created, particularly around the pickup bed and interior.

One clever feature is the original rear tailgate window, which has been incorporated into the back of the cab and can still be opened and closed. The pickup bed also has a removable frame and cover, allowing it to be enclosed. The owner's daughter has even used the car for occasional overnight camping.

The current owner purchased the car in 2005 and has enjoyed it mainly during the summer months, keeping it in a warm garage over winter. In recent years, the car has seen relatively little use. We have test-driven it, and it drives well, with no unusual mechanical noises or major issues noted. Ideally, it would benefit from a service and carburettor adjustment, as the engine runs and idles well but occasionally cuts out when coming to a stop. This requires investigation and adjustment.

The pickup conversion is now over 30 years old, and the car remains a presentable and charming classic. The interior is exceptionally clean, as is the engine bay. The paintwork was originally finished to a reasonable standard, with some older paint runs still visible, along with age-related marks and areas of cracking. However, there are no significant rust issues to report, and the chrome bumpers present almost like new.

This is a characterful and unusual Amazon pickup that can be enjoyed in its current condition. A good polish would certainly improve its appearance, while a repaint could be considered in the future for anyone wanting to take it to the next level. Overall, a usable and interesting Swedish classic with plenty of character and an enjoyable future ahead.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

B18 engine starts directly with a little choke and benefits from a minute to warm up. It runs well, with no unusual noises, and the engine bay is clean and well maintained, including a neatly fitted aluminium radiator. On the road, the car feels stable, with good, effective brakes. As mentioned, the carburettor would benefit from adjustment, along with a general service. The car is exempt from periodic roadworthiness inspections in Sweden and is fitted with a good set of wheels, bright chrome hubcaps and older but usable tyres.

  • Interior condition

Interior is clean and tidy, featuring custom-made wooden trim finished to a very good standard, including the door cards, dashboard panels, headliner and interior panels. The front seats are believed to be from a Volvo 240 and remain in good condition. The original instrumentation and gauges are in working order, and the car is fitted with a modern radio. A particularly nice feature is the opening rear cab window, which was originally the Amazon estate's tailgate window.

  • Exterior condition

A presentable-looking car with straight bodywork, although a closer inspection reveals some paint cracks, blistering, older filler marks and paint runs. The paintwork was completed to a reasonable standard at the time but could certainly be improved, ideally with a repaint in the future. Please see the detailed photos. The underbody appears solid, with evidence of older welding repairs. The custom wooden side trims, door details and particularly the neatly finished wooden trim surrounding the pickup bed are well made and give the car its distinctive character.

  • General condition

It's not every day you see a Volvo Amazon pickup on the road! Several people stopped to admire the car while we were taking photographs, many saying they had never seen one before. A charming and unusual classic that can be enjoyed just as it is, with plenty of scope for further improvements over time.
