"A car where much work has been done recently, but a final touch is needed before it’s ready to hit the road again."

Description

This car was sold new in January 1966. The seventh owner entered the picture in 1986 when he bought the car from his brother. At that time, it was painted in California White, though it was originally finished in Graphite Gray (color code 80).

The car became a popular ride among young enthusiasts and was driven quite a bit, but over the years it saw less and less use. By the mid-1990s, it was resting in a woodshed until 2017, when it was brought back out onto the road — though some work was needed. The front fenders were replaced, and the sills were repaired before it was stored again. Last year, the owner resumed the project and had the car repainted in its original color. The engine was serviced, the carburetors were rebuilt and adjusted, and new air filters were fitted. A new fuel pump, distributor, and battery were also installed, along with a new radiator and fuel tank.

The brakes were refurbished with new discs, calipers, pads, and wheel cylinders, and new rear wheel bearings were fitted. That’s where progress paused, as new interests and projects took over. There are still tasks remaining before the car can pass inspection, and some details need to be completed to finish the restoration. A few spare parts and some documentation come with the car.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The car starts easily and the mechanical components appear to function well, though it does need an inspection and service. During a short test drive on a forest road, it ran smoothly and calmly, though with a somewhat firm ride. The stainless steel exhaust system also makes slight contact with the underbody and needs adjustment. The underside has not been inspected on a lift, so there may be details requiring attention.

At the most recent inspection, several remarks were noted — all of which have now been addressed except for the position lights, which still need to be checked.

  • Interior condition:

The interior is in a patinated original condition but appears to be largely complete. Last year, however, the front seats were reupholstered, while the door panels and trim are loosely fitted and need attention. The carpets also require care or replacement. Several details need to be checked — for instance, the ignition switch has a custom solution. The tachometer is not working, and a few other gauges have uncertain functionality.

  • Exterior condition:

The car has been repainted in its original color and has a nice, glossy finish. There are some gaps at the lower edges of the doors. Glass, trim, and lighting components are in good condition. The operation of the position lights needs to be checked. The wheels have been repainted, and the Hankook tires are new. Both the engine bay and trunk are in good condition but could be further improved. The engine bay is not fully painted, and the rear wheel arches have not been resprayed.

  • General condition:

A P1800S from the last year with the curved door moldings is a hot and sought-after car. Much has already been done, and some work remains, but most functions are now in order. As a sports car from the swinging ’60s, with its Swedish, Italian, and British roots and character, this is an icon and a true classic.

Facts about the model

Considered by many to be Volvo’s most beautiful car, the P1800 was designed by Pelle Petterson in the late 1950s. It was produced from 1961 through 1972 and was succeeded by the shooting brake version, the 1800ES, in 1972. Production ended in 1973, mainly due to new U.S. crash safety regulations requiring bulky bumpers.

During the first two years, the cars were assembled in England by Jensen. Production then moved to Volvo’s Torslanda plant in Sweden, where the model gained the “S” suffix — standing for Svenskbyggd (Swedish-built) — to highlight that it was now made in Sweden. At the time, “Made in Sweden” was seen as a mark of quality, something the British-built examples didn’t always live up to. From April onward, the model became the 1800S, first as the 1963 model year and then as 1964, with few major changes.

For the 1965 model year, however, several updates were introduced, as with other Volvos: a new grille, a full front bumper, and new wheels and hubcaps. For 1966, power output increased thanks to a new exhaust manifold and system, along with a permanently lubricated front suspension and improved rear axle design. This was also the last year with the distinctive upward-curved side molding on the doors. The 1966 model year saw 4,500 cars produced.

In total, around 36,000 examples were built.
