"A car in the simple and popular version, inspected and in running condition, with some details that could use attention and improvement."

Description

Probably a Swedish-sold car that had fallen out of the registry and was re-registered in March 2020. It comes from the Strömsund area. The current owner, a knowledgeable vehicle enthusiast, acquired the car in August 2021 and has driven it sparingly — about 50 miles. In 2022, he replaced the pistons and rings as well as the clutch and friction plate. It is inspected and approved until further notice. A spare engine and gearbox are included, along with the heater unit, which has been removed but comes with the car.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The car starts easily and the engine runs well. During a short drive, it performed well mechanically. It has not been inspected on a lift, but the vital parts appear to be in good condition. Approved at inspection.

  • Interior condition:

Pleasant and fairly well-preserved vinyl interior with some patina. Steering wheel, controls, and dashboard are in good condition. The headliner is in good shape. One insert for the rear ashtray is missing. Electrical functions and gauges appear to work, except for the fuel gauge. The heater unit has been removed.

  • Exterior condition:

The car has been partly or fully repainted and shows signs of use, with some areas and details that could use attention. Glass, trim, and emblems are in similar condition. Lighting components are in good shape. The hubcaps are from an Anglia. The stone guard for the right rear fender is missing.

  • General condition:

A charming little car in a simpler entry-level version from a time when owning a car wasn’t yet common for the average family. With a price tag under 4,000 kronor, however, it became an attainable option for working-class families, and quite a few were sold. This one is in usable condition — a pleasant survivor well worth preserving. The level of investment and ownership commitment is up to the new owner.

Facts about the model

When the new Ford Anglia 100E was introduced in 1953 with its modern “ponton” body, Ford continued to produce the older model, the Ford Popular — originally launched back in 1939 as a simpler entry-level car. For many years, it held the title of the cheapest car you could buy. It featured a basic side-valve engine producing 26 hp, a three-speed manual gearbox, and very little in the way of luxury or equipment.

The model was produced in two generations by Ford’s British subsidiary between 1953 and 1962 — first in the old prewar-style body until 1959, and then in the Anglia’s ponton-style body when that model received its new wraparound windshield at the turn of the 1950s and 1960s.

The older cars, with roots before World War II, remain immensely popular in England. Known as the Ford Pop, they are cherished both as original classics and as the basis for everything from mild customs to wild hot rod conversions. The model was also popular in Sweden, where it earned nicknames like “the hot dog stand” and “four standing places.” Here too, enthusiasts have built lively versions — even ones meant for the drag strip.
