Description

This vehicle was registered for traffic in Sweden in September 1947 and was then acquired by the military. It reportedly operated in Värmland and was decommissioned in 1956. It was subsequently owned by two brothers in the Stockholm area until November 2005. At that time, it was purchased by a vehicle enthusiast who lifted the body to go through the vehicle; it looked good. The brakes were renovated and a new exhaust system was installed. The cylinder head was replaced due to a small crack. New tires in a larger size were acquired for better gearing/comfort. Over the years, the owner and the Jeep have participated in various vintage events and meets. Last year, the vehicle was serviced with oil changes and a new water pump. The current owner recently bought it but wants to focus on motorcycles. It is ready to drive and in a pleasant original condition. A set of keys and some literature are included.

The odometer starts over at 100,000 km, the total mileage is unknown.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts easily and runs well in the engine and drivetrain. During a calm test drive in a rural residential area, it felt quick and was in working condition with respect to steering, clutch, gear shifting, and brakes, which require a bit of muscle. Not tested in low gear on rough terrain but is reportedly working well. Everything appears to function as intended. Not checked on a lift but it was possible to inspect it from underneath, and it looked good.

  • Interior condition:

Robust condition in original design with normal wear and tear.

  • Exterior condition:

A sturdy wagon with normal wear and tear for its age, mileage, and purpose. A complete frame with accompanying side pieces and a tarp in a patinated condition is included. The engine compartment is in good condition.

  • General condition:

With its history and genuine condition and function, this is a motor and military-historically interesting classic and enthusiast vehicle.

Facts about the model

The iconic original Jeep was built between 1941 and 1945. Both Willys Overland (MB) and Ford (GPW) produced this light off-road vehicle for use by the Allies during World War II. Nearly 360,000 units were built by Willys MB, and about 278,000 units were produced by Ford. They were four-wheel drive with a three-speed gearbox equipped with high and low gears.

After the war, many were sold through surplus stock around the world. The CJ2A model was the successor to the so-called 'war Jeep.' These were sold under the slogan 'Peace Jeep' from 1945 to 1953. The visible differences were the larger headlights that were recessed and fewer slats in the grille, along with less 'war equipment.' In Sweden, they were not only used by the military but also frequently as tow trucks, fire engines, and in agriculture. Many remained in service for decades.

The origin of the name 'Jeep' is debated, so we can leave that aside, but what's interesting is how a brand like Jeep (often the first in its segment) becomes part of the language and is used generically to refer to other products of the same type, much like Tetra Pak and Gore-Tex.
