"It has been repaired for rust and renovated, including a new paint job and an installed sunroof that lets in nature, as well as a replaced engine. Still, it provides a nice 50s feel, especially since much of the interior appears to be the original."

Description

This car was registered for road use in January 1954. According to the current owner, he is the fourth in the line of ownership. He acquired the car in June 1992. A few years later, he decided to restore the car, addressing the following:

Rust in the rear wheel wells was repaired. Sheet metal was replaced in the spare wheel well, the bulkhead tips on both sides, the lower sections of the body behind the doors, and the H-plate under the engine lid (which is from a newer model than the car's original year). The sunroof was welded in, sourced from another '54 model. When acquired, the car was missing its fenders. The rear fenders now come from a newer model, while the front ones are from a '50 model. The entire car was stripped down to bare metal, filled, and then repainted by a professional body shop in its original color, Stratossilver.

The engine currently installed is a low-mileage 30 hp unit from the military. It was replaced last year along with a new clutch plate. The engine was started and test-driven, running perfectly. The original engine is included but requires a rebuild—most likely, it's the third cylinder that is faulty, which is a common issue for the 30 hp engine.

Since the current owner took possession, the car has always been garage-kept and has been sparingly driven over the last ten years. It has been regularly serviced by a VW workshop in the Stockholm area. Included with the car, in addition to the original engine, the owner's manual, a spare parts catalog, and a set of keys.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

During the inspection, the car could not be test-driven as the battery was discharged. According to information, the car was driven last year when the engine was replaced and it worked perfectly at that time. According to information, everything is functioning as it should. Not checked on a lift, but everything underneath that could be seen looks completely okay, including around the footsteps and fender mounts. The heating function is uncertain.

  • Interior condition:

Interior such as chairs, back seat, door sides, and panels, as well as textile and rubber mats, appear to be in original condition. Some signs of wear but in good condition for its age. The headliner is new and not completely installed at the rear edge near the sunroof. Material/padding is included. The pleasant accessory shelf under the dashboard is there, as well as the steering wheel lock.

  • Exterior condition:

Nice glossy paintwork, somewhat dusty during inspection and photography. Glass, chrome, trims, emblems, and lighting details look good. The directional arrows look good too. Fun feature with the insect shield on the hood. Wheels and tires in good condition. Tire age uncertain. Engine and trunk compartments are in good condition.

  • General condition:

An oval bubble with 30 horsepower, a sunroof, and painted in Stratos Silver is a sought-after model. The condition is fine and genuine. However, the vehicle now needs some attention and an overhaul. There should not be any major actions needed. A vehicle with a high classic and enthusiast factor.

Facts about the model

There are miles of text written about the history of the VW Beetle, covering everything from the project's inception in the 1930s, to how British soldiers restarted production after World War II, and how the first cars made their way to Sweden and Scania Vabis in 1948. So, let’s quickly jump five years ahead to 1953.

In that year, the split rear window was replaced by the so-called "oval" window, and the vent windows received locking knobs. The front of the car got small grilles. Late that year, an upgraded engine was introduced, featuring 1192 cc and 30 horsepower. For the 1954 model year, no major changes were made.

Year after year, the Beetle continued to evolve with small and slightly larger changes until 1974, when the last Beetle was manufactured in Wolfsburg. The final Beetle produced in Europe rolled off the production line at the Emden factory in 1978. After that, production continued in Brazil and Mexico, but in 2003, nearly 50 years after this 1954 model was built, the long-lived icon came to an end.

A total of 21,429,480 VW Type 1 cars were produced.
