"The Saab 92 is a historically important car and a milestone for Swedish automobile manufacturing. Without it, we would never have had two Swedish car manufacturers. The 92B was an improved and updated version of the Saab 92. This particular Saab was rescued from a scrapyard in Värmland in 1990 and restored by a newly retired enthusiast with a great passion for Saab. The nice thing about this car is that it has been used after the restoration and not just put away in storage. It is now 36 years since the car was restored, and it has acquired a few minor blemishes. These include an outward dent in the left front fender, chrome that is not up to standard, and some welding work needed in the trunk area. Otherwise, it has been inspected and approved by the Swedish vehicle inspection and is ready to drive."

Description

The car was purchased by the current owner's father in 1990 at Årjängs Bildemontering in Värmland. The car was a good project, see the attached pickup photos, where the car is standing on the trailer. Rust damage in the floor and at the rear shock absorber mounts was repaired, and the car was disassembled and painted both inside and out. A new interior was then made. Once the car was finished, it was used during the summers as a classic car at various car meets. In 1999, the restorer passed away and the car went to his wife. The family continued to use the car sparingly during the summers. In 2021, the widow also passed away and the son acquired the car as an inheritance. The car is now being sold due to changed interests and storage issues. The car has been maintained continuously since the restoration in 1990. The Saab was last inspected by the Swedish vehicle inspection on May 23, 2023, and is now exempt from inspection.
The car comes with a spare wheel, owner's manual, some documentation, and a Saab workshop manual (copy).

This is a distance auction. Photos and information about the vehicle and its technical condition have been obtained from the owner. BWA has therefore not inspected the car on site at the seller's location.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Equipped with Saab's classic two-cylinder 2-stroke engine of 764 cubic inches, or 0.7 liters of displacement, producing 28 lively horsepower. Three-speed with column shift lever and unsynchronized first gear. The carburetor was rebuilt 2 years ago, at the same time as parts of the electrical system were replaced due to voltage drop. The engine starts easily and the car runs just as a 92 should. The heater unit was never installed during the 1990 restoration, as the car has only been driven in the summertime. We believe that most of the parts needed to reinstall the heater unit have been saved, but cannot guarantee that it is complete.

  • Interior condition

The entire interior was renovated in 1990, when an upholsterer stitched new upholstery in the original style. The interior still looks very fine. During inspection and photography, it was discovered that the floor under the spare wheel needs attention. There is damage in the middle of the trunk floor that must be welded. See photo. The upper sections of the inner fenders in the trunk area could also be tidied up a bit, if one wishes to make the car even finer.

  • Exterior condition

The car was repainted in 1990, at which time rust in the floor pans was repaired. The grille was also rechromed at the same time. Unfortunately, the chrome plating proved not to be up to standard, so the chrome has come loose in a few places. The front and rear bumpers are original and in good usable condition. The left front fender has an outward dent where the paint has cracked. This occurred when the engine and gearbox were removed 3-4 years ago for an overhaul. Two years ago, new tires were fitted all around.

  • General condition

A 36-year-old restoration that has now acquired a certain patina. The car is in good, functional driver condition. There is the possibility to address the noted issues over time while still enjoying the car.

Facts about the model

SAAB's automobile operations saw the light of day in 1947, and the first model, the Saab 92, had borrowed some of its design from the company's aircraft business.

When the first model year of the Saab 92 finally arrived as a 1950 model, after years of testing and the premiere showing on June 10, 1947, the waiting list was long. Production was not exactly fast-paced at first; only 1,246 cars were built the first year. In the early years, bottle green in De Luxe trim was the standard. For the 1953 model year, the first major changes arrived when the rear window was enlarged, the fuel tank was relocated, and the cars now received a trunk lid. The luggage compartment also grew larger when the battery was moved to the engine compartment. The seats were updated as well. Internally, it was now called the 92B. For the 1954 model, a series of upgrades was made and the model was now officially designated the 92B. A new carburetor (Solex 32) and new ignition coils increased output from 25 to 28 hp. The paint became synthetic, and trim moldings were added to the fenders. The wheels received ventilation holes. New headlights from Hella with integrated parking lights meant the small lamps between the headlights, grille, and fenders disappeared. The instrumentation and interior details were also changed. The colors were now gray, blue-gray, green, maroon red, and black. On March 6, 1954, Saab no. 10,000 rolled out of the factory. You could now also order your 92 with a fabric sunroof. The last Saab 92s were built in 1956, by which time the successor, the model 93, had already been introduced. A total of 34,956 examples of the model 92 were built, of which 14,828 were the B version.
