Facts about the model
W.R. Morris was inspired by Henry Ford, and unlike most other British manufacturers, he bought parts for his cars from outside suppliers, which allowed him to keep prices down. Morris soon became Britain's largest car manufacturer. During the 1920s, Wolseley was acquired, and in competition with the Austin Seven, the Minor model was developed and introduced. Success failed to materialize, but the model formed the basis for the MG Midget, which became a success. By 1935, however, W.R. Morris had sold off his holdings, and Morris, MG and Wolseley became part of the Nuffield group. In 1952, the company merged with its former main rival Austin to form the British Motor Corporation. The differences between the various marques were erased relatively quickly, and Morris cars became copies of Austin models. When the British Leyland Motor Corporation was formed in 1968, the former BMC became a division within the new constellation. In the end, the Morris name was used only for the rear-wheel-drive models. From 1971, only the Morris Marina remained. It was discontinued in 1980 and replaced by the Morris Ital until 1984, after which the story of Morris was over.
Back to 1948: since the Second World War, Alec Issigonis had been working on developing a new small car. He tested front-wheel drive, a boxer engine and other innovations, some of which would appear in, among others, the Mini just over ten years later. Even so, this marked the beginning of a new and successful era with a small people's car that was produced from 1948 to 1971. It ended up with traditional rear-wheel drive and a 4-cylinder inline engine with a 4-speed gearbox. The model still offered a number of innovations, such as unibody construction, rack-and-pinion steering and independent front suspension with torsion bar springing. From the start, however, the model had an old-fashioned flathead engine and a split windshield, as well as low-mounted headlights, which were moved up into the fenders from 1951. For the 1953 model year came the Series II with a new overhead-valve engine of 803cc. In the fall of 1956, the Morris Minor 1000 was introduced. A new engine and new rear axle ratio now made the car genuinely lively, and with improved road holding it became considerably better to drive. The styling was modernized with a one-piece windshield and a larger rear window. The car sold very well and in January became the first British car to reach one million units produced. The model was built as two- and four-door sedans, a two-door convertible called the Tourer, and the Traveller station wagon. There were also a couple of light trucks, a van and a pickup in a series called Morris Commercial.
Despite new models such as the Mini and the 1100, there was continued demand for the Morris Minor, which was produced throughout the 1960s and into the 1970s. The last one built was a Traveller on April 1, 1971.
In total, 1,303,331 Morris Minors of various types were produced.
