"The car makes a solid impression and starts and runs well."

Description

There aren’t many left of this once so common family car, but in Ånge there is one with a delightful history and in good working condition. The green and somewhat patinated Volvo has been on the same farm since it was bought new by the current owner’s grandfather. There are a few minor blemishes on the body but it is still very well-maintained. The car is inspected without any remarks and with just 44,000 km on the odometer, it will continue to run for many more years. Winter tires and a roof rack are included.

Very nice and complete interior for its age. The ceiling is intact and spotless, the seats are whole, and the floor mats are in normal condition. Minor damage to the door sides.

The car has never been repainted or had any bodywork done. It is painted in a green color which is in good condition, and a polish will make the car shine again. The windshield will be replaced before sale due to damage. The car has some minor dents (see photos). There are a few minor superficial rust damages under the left rear side window, at the bottom of the doors, and in the sills.

  • General condition:

A genuine, original car in good working condition.

Owner's comment

The car was purchased new at Bilbolaget in Ånge by the current owner's grandfather, who drove it until 1994 when the current owner took over. The car was then used sparingly as the family's second car and in recent years has only been driven during the summer on short trips. It has been kept in the same garage in Ånge throughout all these years. The car is a small family heirloom, but I no longer have the time or enough interest in it and hope that it will find its way to a true enthusiast who can take good care of it.

Facts about the model

The Volvo 343 was launched in 1976 as a complement to the 240 models, and the 340/360 series was continuously updated and produced all the way until 1991. The 343 model was developed by Volvo's Dutch subsidiary in Born. The car was partially designed by Giovanni Michelotti, who designed all the previous DAF models. The design features made it resemble Italian cars of a similar size, such as the Alfa Romeo 33 and Lancia Delta. Volvo's small car, which had begun development by DAF, was named the Volvo 343, where the last digit indicated the number of doors according to the same system as the 140/240 series. (Among the cars Michelotti designed are several Ferrari models from the 1950s, as well as Lancia and Maserati, including the Maserati 3500GT and Maserati 5000GT, along with the BMW 700 and later the BMW 2002).

Initially, the Volvo 340 was only available as a 3-door hatchback (343). From the 1980 model year, a 5-door hatchback (345) was introduced, and from 1986, a 4-door sedan model was available. The engine at the start was only a 1.4-liter Renault engine with a carburetor, paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) belt drive integrated with the final drive. From 1979, a 4-speed manual gearbox (M45) was offered as an alternative to the belt drive, and in 1982, a 4-speed with electronic overdrive (M46) was introduced. In 1983, a 5-speed gearbox (M47) was launched, borrowed from the Volvo 240.

Volvo had updated the CVT system so that in an acceleration test, it was nearly as fast as the manual variant. The Volvo 340 achieved great success in rallying and was built in nearly 1.4 million units. The car sold well in countries such as the Netherlands, Belgium, England, and Germany. It was appreciated for its excellent road handling and high safety (as safe as the Volvo 240).
