"A reliable and usable vehicle with good loading capacity. Here as the 1967 model year, featuring, among other things, floor shift. It's ready to drive as it is, but there are details to address for an even better finish."

Description

A Swedish-sold vehicle with two actual users. The current owner has owned the car for over 35 years. It has been sparingly driven over the years but has periodically received various upgrades and care. When the car had received fiberglass fenders at the front, the current owner had these changed to metal fenders and new front doors. It was then repainted in the same shade (white) as another Mercedes in his possession; originally, the car was light gray. The car has received new valve seals and intake valves, and the cylinder head has been lifted. The original Solex twin carburetor has been replaced with Zenith, but the original is included with the exhaust manifold. The gearbox has been replaced; the original is available but has been "cut". A new Boge automatic hydropneumatic leveling system has been reinstated. There's an equalizing spring, which was fitted if one doesn't want the pneumatic system. Original rims with old Michelin X tires are also included.

The driver's seat has been repaired and has new upholstery; the remaining seats are original. New carpets and door sill protectors. Seat belts in five places. The interior has also received some wooden details from another Mercedes. The odometer reads 8,689 kilometers, and it's likely the meter has "rolled over" at least once. Tow hitch. Inspected and ready to drive.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts easily and ran smoothly once warmed up. A pleasant drive, and most things seem to work well, but there are issues that need addressing. The speedometer wavers a bit, the ignition lock can be intermittent, the radio needs a power cord, the pedal for the windshield wiper (new) doesn't work, the right fog light is out of order, as is the reverse light, and the interior lighting in the cargo space needs to be fixed.

The car has not been inspected on a lift, but from what could be seen, everything looked okay. However, there are details to further inspect and possibly address.

  • Interior condition:

The interior is in good original condition with some patina, and it has a nice upgrade with some wooden details. However, there's damage to the wood near the left A-pillar. The upholstery is in good shape, and there are new fabric mats in the cabin. The headliner and door panels are in good condition. The cargo area shows signs of use but retains its original appearance.

  • Exterior condition:

Repainted several years ago and still in good condition. There is some rust damage by the wheel arch edge at the back towards the sill on the right front fender, as well as some scratches and minor dents around the car. There's some uncertainty around and behind the kick panel strips, and one of the strips has become slightly detached near the "fins". Chrome, glass, and rubber are in decent condition, but there are dents on the front bumper and the strips at the top edge of the doors are too short. The tires are in good condition.

  • General condition:

A genuine vehicle in drivable condition, where the new owner can use it as it is, make repairs gradually, or invest time in upgrades and restoration. Regardless, it is an interesting and sought-after classic with collector status and potential.

Facts about the model

Mercedes-Benz W110 was manufactured between April 1961 and February 1968. From Mercedes' side, there were no plans to produce a station wagon version of the W110.
The Belgian company IMA, which specialized in converting cars into station wagons, introduced a modified W110 at the Brussels Motor Show in January 1965, named "Universal".

In Germany, as mentioned, there was skepticism about a Mercedes station wagon. However, the Swedish importer Philipsons was convinced that there was a market for an elegant estate car. The car body manufacturer IMA in Belgium was engaged, and specifically for Sweden, the Mercedes-Benz 190D Safari was developed, later also the 230 Petrol with 105 hp. The model would also be sold in other markets, but under the name Universal. Today, the Safari/Universal is a really rare model that arouses great collector interest among enthusiasts around the world.
