Description

The car has a Swedish history from new but was de-registered sometime in the 1960s. It was revived in 1969 with vital parts from various related Mercedes vehicles, including a 170 b cabriolet which shared parts of its body with the 220 b. The current owner purchased it in 1976, intending and hoping to restore the Merc over a couple of years. Unexpected challenges, conscious decisions, and difficult choices over the years meant it took 45 years until 2021 for it to be roadworthy again. The restoration journey has been long but has been a part of a life, a social gift, and a joy to work in the garage. Mostly. The body has been renovated from the ground up, and that part of the restoration was the most protracted. It was, of course, about time and other factors, but mainly about craftsmanship, someone who mastered the craft. After sandblasting and inspecting the car, the owner discovered that there had been multiple patchworks and repairs over time. The entire old trunk floor is cut out and hung on the wall, showing several overlapping metal sheets, a pop-riveted lid from a coffee can, and generally poor welding spots. This is a prime example of the craftsmanship and meticulousness, how parts of the new metal in the floor were shaped to an exact fit. Today, the owner can point to countless details and solutions that are not visible, but he is notably proud of having executed everything with the right original mindset and without shortcuts.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The engine starts up easily with an extra-strong Optima 6V battery, and one can't help but marvel at the somehow modern six-cylinder sound from the machine, even though we're talking about the early 1950s. The engine itself was renovated quite early in the process by the owner. At some point in the 1950s or 1960s, the gear operation was converted from column shift to a more easily maneuvered floor shift, a common conversion for that model and time.

  • Interior condition:

Beautiful and inviting leather upholstery in treated original condition, combined with plush carpets and delightful details to feast your eyes on; chrome, wood, and attractive instruments. The original radio works, but the stations you can tune into are both obscure and tricky. More enjoyable then is the 3.5mm audio cable that allows playback from your phone or another device, with sound coming from the original speaker beneath the instrument panel.

  • Exterior condition:

The paint, chrome, glass, and especially the soft top are in a meticulously exemplary condition. Not least the latter, where the owner has done an exceptional job with the chrome trims – there are no visible screw heads or other fasteners.

  • General condition:

Today, a car like this, in this condition, is a beautiful shape and a kind of art installation on wheels. But it's also a car in a usable state for excursions, long journeys, and wanderings; it's ready for use and not just for short-distance car meets.

Facts about the model

The 220 B W187 was actually a 170 b with the new six-cylinder engine and a different body. The development of the new engine was far ahead of the development of the new 220 S.
