"Simple, fun and unusual car with patina."

Description

Sold new in Halmstad in 1974 by an MC dealer called Halmstad-Gustav. The first owner was an older couple who traded in as a Heinkel Trojan. They used the Bond Bug as a utility vehicle a bit into the eighties. After that, the car stayed in the Halmstad area before it ended up with an enthusiast in Värmland in 2011. The car was renovated there. Mainly the chassis and engine were put in order and later the upholstery was changed.

The car is registered as a motorcycle but may be driven on a regular B license. It is registered with a tow-bar included.

The instruction book is available with extra details for the rare 750ES variant. Only 142 Bond bugs were fitted with this engine.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

All-aluminium four-cylinder overhead valve engine made by Reliant ditto, four-speed gearbox. Rigid rear axle with coil overs and adjustable dampers.

The chassis and engine were renovated a few years ago, and then the brakes, petrol tank, starter motor, radiator and other things were also changed. However, the gearbox and clutch were not renovated at that time. The engine starts easily, runs well and pulls well. Speaking of the gearbox - the third gear can jump out (the lever's attachment is defective). It was flimsy from the start and is close to 50 years of use and has not improved that point.

  • Interior condition:

The instruments are in the middle and the engine is placed under a cover inside the cabin. The odometer’s function is a bit weak. The upholstery was changed a few years ago but kept up its original appearance. The body is painted fibreglass plastic. Some brushwork and black paint splatter can be seen on the wings. The seats are comfortable with good support. In the back, there is a surprisingly spacious trunk with a spare wheel, jack and battery location.

  • Exterior condition:

Mostly original paint with some touch-ups. The black Bugstripe at the front is missing. The car has been used quite a lot over the years and is in ok working condition. Cracks have appeared in the fibreglass at the hinges. A common syndrome on Bugs is when as here an incorrect hydraulic lift is often fitted to the hood. It is too short and too strong, therefore it becomes deformed. Extra reinforcement was added to the right hinge.

On the equipment side, there are double sun visors, wipers, and washer, a heating package (not connected) interior lighting, lighter, an ashtray, a spare wheel and a towbar.

  • General condition:

Reliable and durable car in usable condition, insanely fun in design and driving experience. Attracts a lot of attention wherever you go.

Some may be wondering about the road holding but it’s much more stable than it looks. It has exact and distinct steering and can be easily controlled at highway speeds. It has 34 horsepower - top speed approx. 140km/h.

Facts about the model
