"A rare Volvo station wagon in our latitudes, with American history and specification. A sober color scheme and most of the luxury features of its day make this a car that stands out at meets and events. There are details to attend to, but for the most part it's just a matter of getting in and driving. The turbo engine is reliable and pulls along steadily."

Description

This car was registered in the USA on June 1, 1989. According to information, it was driven in California by three owners before being imported to Sweden in July last year. A Swede now living "over there" bought it there and brought it here to Sweden. His son, a Volvo enthusiast, takes care of the car. They have also driven it as an enthusiast car and participated in several meets and events. Last year, an overhaul and service was carried out, including a brake inspection with new brake fluid and bleeding of all calipers. New expansion tank and new coolant. New ball joints up front, plus wheel alignment. Nokian summer tires mounted and balanced. Interior overhaul with cleaning and conditioning of the leather upholstery. The original chrome roof rack was removed at some point in the USA.

The car comes with various small items and the housing for the roof light fixture, which has come loose. Included is a chrome trim strip for the front bumpers. Also included are the original owner's manuals and a filled-in service booklet, plus a fun accessory: a folder with a cleaning cassette and more for the stereo.

The car is inspected until July 31, 2027, and ready to drive.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

In the US, the Volvo 765 was at this time equipped with the legendary B230FT 2.3-liter turbo engine with 8 valves, an engine considered extremely durable. This one started easily and ran nicely. Test driven at a calm pace in city traffic. Steering, automatic gearbox with kickdown and overdrive, as well as brakes worked well. One brake light and one turn signal failed during the test drive, but this turned out to be a loose connection. A once-over is recommended.

Not checked on a lift, but photos taken earlier are available. Both these and the ones now taken of the underside, along with history from California and rustproofing, show a largely rust-free car.

The heater core has started to leak and has therefore been temporarily bypassed.

  • Interior condition

While in California, it was subject to a break-in in which the front seats were damaged, but they were reupholstered through the insurance company. Otherwise, the interior is in fine and well-preserved original condition for its age and mileage. Many boxes checked on the period options list, with central locking, power seats, power windows, power antenna, power mirrors, power sunroof, working ECC, and the original radio with equalizer - all in working order. Cruise control with uncertain function. Equipped with an extra seat in the cargo area.

  • Exterior condition

Appears to be largely original paint in good condition. There is normal wear consistent with age and mileage, including minor scratches, stone chips, a small dent, and paint scuffs. The California sun has faded spots on the roof, sunroof, and hood.

  • General condition

After years of hectic family life and hard work in commercial service, the ranks of these faithful servants are now rapidly dwindling. A new era as a classic begins for those that have been cared for and survived. A US-market car with its specific equipment is a "rare bird" here, which makes it an interesting classic and an exotic collector vehicle. Fine and driver-friendly condition in need of some attention to details. Drive it as is or refine it further.

Facts about the model

Say Volvo 740/760... and most people have owned, ridden in, or have memories of these classics. The 700 series was launched in 1982, as Volvo's new luxury car, the 760. In 1984, the people's car and simpler version, the 740, was introduced. First came a GLE version with fuel injection and 130 hp. Then came the true volume model, the GL with carburetor and 112 hp. Our beloved "sossecontainer" would be produced through 1992 in a wide range of versions, including sedan and station wagon. It was replaced by an updated version in the 900 series, which logically came to be called the 940.
