"A late 245 that, after passing inspection at the Swedish vehicle inspection authority, is ready to be put back on the road."

Description

Here we have one of Sweden's most popular cars of all time, a Volvo 245 in good driver condition. The car makes a good impression both mechanically and cosmetically. Naturally, there are traces of age and use, such as a few minor rust spots and scratches. Under the hood sits the well-known 2.3-liter B230F, a four-cylinder gasoline engine with fuel injection producing around 116 hp and 185 Nm. 1991 was one of the final model years, and the car had received several of the improvements that characterized the late 240s. Among other things, the 245 received the tailgate with a larger bonded window as early as 1990, while the 1991 model got an improved windshield and a flatter molding around the glass that reduced wind noise and improved protection against stone chips. ABS brakes were available as an option on the GL. In short, a 1991 Volvo 245 GL 2.3 is a late and well-developed version of the classic 240 — practical, mechanically straightforward, and with the period-typical Volvo feel that has made the model a Swedish classic.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Runs well in engine and drivetrain. The brakes engage well and smoothly. The car is registered with an automatic gearbox according to the Swedish Transport Agency but is equipped with a manual gearbox and overdrive. The current owner states that he has previously had the car inspected with this manual gearbox.

  • Interior condition

The interior is overall in good and nice condition, but the passenger seat and front door panel have been replaced at some point, and the pattern and color differ from the rest of the car's upholstery. Door pockets on the front doors are missing. There are some small holes in the headliner, see photo.

  • Exterior condition

The paint is in good condition with signs of age. On the exterior, the Volvo looks good and has nothing to be ashamed of. The car looks good underneath, as is often the case with a Volvo from the 90s. There are some minor rust spots, see photos. Equipped with genuine Galaxy wheels.

  • General condition

A Volvo 245 in good usable condition. This particular example is one of the last model years and features the more modern rear window. Fine overall impression.

Facts about the model

This year marks 33 years since Volvo ended production of the 240 – Sweden's best-selling car model. From 1983, Volvo had decided to drop the old model designations 242, 244 and 245 – from then on, all were called 240. In 1984, all variants with fuel-injected engines – that is, GLT, GLE and Turbo – received a new front with a raised hood and black grille, and at the same time all models got position lights on the front fenders. For 1985, all models received redesigned engines for reduced internal friction. The lower friction reduced fuel consumption and provided better cold-start characteristics. The engines had a new cast-iron block and an aluminum cylinder head.
The Volvo 240, which was based on the 140 series, was introduced in 1974. Over the years it underwent several changes, and when its successor, the 740, was introduced in 1984, many probably believed the 240 would disappear. However, production would continue all the way until 1993.
When the Volvo 740 was introduced in 1984, many believed the 240's days were numbered, but it continued to be built all the way until 1993 – that is, one year after the last Volvo 740 was produced. The 740, however, got a successor in the form of the Volvo 940, which was built through 1998. After 1985, the number of model variants was reduced; among other things, the two-door model was discontinued, as Volvo focused on the then recently launched, and intended successor, Volvo 740 as the larger-volume car in the model lineup. Production did not end until 1993, when space was needed for the Volvo 850. On May 5, 1993, the last Volvo 240 was built – a green station wagon.
