SAAB 99 Turbo 2.0 — 1980

Saab 99 Turbo, in its final model year of 1980, is one of just 1,363 examples produced. Finished in classic Acacia Green with a matching green interior, it is a true icon of the early turbo era and, even today, remains an engaging and genuinely fun driver’s car.

"A good-looking example with solid bodywork that has undergone renovation work over the years. It runs and drives fine, with plenty of turbo boost. Just a few jobs remain to finish the car off and get it ready for inspection."

Description

A Swedish-sold car with nine registered owners in total. Only 1,363 Saab 99 Turbo models were produced for the 1980 model year, with this particular example built in Finland.

The car was last inspected in 1992, around the time it entered long-term ownership lasting until 2016. Much of the renovation work appears to have been carried out during this period, but the project was never fully completed. It subsequently passed through a few further owners without being finished.

For the right Saab enthusiast, this represents a straightforward opportunity to complete an increasingly rare 99 Turbo. Much of the expensive work has already been done, the body is solid, and only a number of smaller jobs remain before it can be presented for inspection and returned to the road. We only see a handful of these cars offered each year, making this an appealing chance to finish and enjoy an iconic early Saab Turbo.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Over the years, the car has benefited from considerable mechanical investment, including a new clutch, head gasket, injectors, ignition leads, distributor cap, ignition coil, air and fuel filters, together with other service components. A new five-speed gearbox was also fitted.
The engine starts easily and, once properly warmed through, feels lively and eager, with the turbo pulling strongly and the gauges working as they should. When cold, the idle is uneven and would benefit from investigation, although it improves considerably once warm. A small rattle appears to come from a loose heat shield and should be a straightforward fix.
A few smaller jobs remain: the immobiliser is currently inoperative, the indicators work intermittently and the handbrake requires attention. The car sits on a nice set of Ronal alloy wheels with good tyres.
Overall, much of the important mechanical work has already been done. A good check-over and a handful of smaller fixes should see this characterful turbo Saab back on the road where it belongs.

  • Interior condition

Interior is complete and generally in good condition, showing some age-related marks and stains but nothing unusual. The driver’s seat has some wear with a few small tears along the side, while the remaining upholstery presents very well. The headliner has been replaced, although slightly loose in one corner, and there are a few minor marks on the driver’s door card. The dashboard is complete and undamaged with working gauges. The boot cover over the spare wheel is missing.

  • Exterior condition

An older repaint that overall presents well, although the driver’s door shows a slight variation in shade. The bumpers display some scuffs and age-related wear. The lower sections of the doors are in fine condition, and the rocker panels are likewise very solid and undamaged.
The underbody is clean and solid, with slight surface rust around the jacking points but nothing serious. The left side of the lower front valance is missing its mesh grille, and the black paint around the left window has started to flake in places

  • General condition

These cars are becoming increasingly difficult to find and highly sought after, thanks to their status as an icon of the 1980s turbo era. With plenty of work already completed and solid bodywork, this example just needs a few smaller jobs before it is ready to get back on the road and enjoyed again.
