Description

This 1950 Dodge Kingsway Custom 4 is a fine time capsule from post-war Sweden. The car was sold new in Sweden and assembled in Sweden, and what distinguishes it above all is that it has essentially been allowed to live its life just as it once left the assembly plant.
This is a car that is, as far as can be seen, original and untouched. It appears never to have been repainted or had rust repairs, which makes its preserved character and patina an important part of the car's history. The original wheels with hubcaps are fitted to the car, mounted with older summer tires.
Over the years, the car has been cared for and given necessary attention without altering its original feel. The radiator and water pump are new, and the front and rear brakes have been checked. The ignition switch has also been replaced, and two keys are included.
For those who appreciate details, there is much to discover. According to the owner, the car's auxiliary equipment works as it should. The instruments function, as do the car's fan system, defroster, and heater. Even the period-typical vacuum-operated windshield wipers work.
The Dodge Kingsway represents an era when American cars stood for comfort, style, and personality. This particular example also offers an unusually clear picture of what a Swedish-market car from 1950 can look like after more than seven decades of being left as it is.

Facts about the model

The 1950 Dodge Kingsway Custom is an interesting American export model from the postwar era. The Kingsway was built by Chrysler for markets outside the USA and was based on Plymouth models, but received Dodge emblems, grille, and certain other Dodge details. The Kingsway series was thus essentially a Plymouth with a Dodge identity.

The 1950 model year was designated D36, and the Kingsway Custom was the more upscale version in the series. It was available as, among other body styles, a four-door sedan, a two-door Club Coupe, and a convertible. The four-door model had a wheelbase of approximately 118.5 inches (3.01 meters).

Under the hood sat a classic straight-six engine of 217.8 cubic inches, equivalent to approximately 3.6 liters, with a single carburetor and around 97 hp. Power was delivered through a traditional three-speed manual gearbox, and the car was rear-wheel drive.

What makes the Kingsway especially interesting is its international history. The model was sold and assembled in several export markets, and the 1950 D36 Kingsway Custom was also assembled in Australia by Chrysler Dodge Distributors.

In Sweden, the Kingsway came to have a special history. ANA in Norrköping assembled the Dodge Kingsway, which makes the model part of Swedish Chrysler and Dodge history.
