"Nicely restored PV444, a fine car for classic enthusiast use."

Description

This car was purchased new in December 1953 and has remained within the same family ever since. In 1965 it was passed on to the daughter of the first owner, and in 1997 it went to the granddaughter, who is still the current owner of the Volvo.

Between 1965 and 1974, the car mainly served as a backup vehicle, but from 1975 it was taken off the road and remained in storage for a long period until the year 2000. At that time, a comprehensive restoration was started and carried out between 2000 and 2002.

The work included, among other things:

Repaint in the original Pearl Grey color (Volvo color code no. 20)

Partial replacement and re-chroming of bumpers

Replacement with original grille

Brake system restoration

New shock absorbers front and rear

Stainless steel exhaust system

Cylinder head refurbishment

Since the restoration, the car has been regularly maintained and has always passed inspections without remarks, most recently in 2018.

Inside, the car has been preserved in original condition. The upholstery is in good shape, while the paint on the dashboard shows some patina and signs of age. When the car was put back into use in 2002, the odometer showed 8 800 km. Today it reads 9 200 km—meaning the car has only been sparingly driven, mostly in summer for outings and car meets.

The car comes with documentation dating all the way back to its purchase in 1953, including the original invoice. Most of the paperwork, however, relates to the time after the restoration and includes inspection reports, invoices, receipts for spare parts, and more. A workshop manual and the so-called “green booklets” are also included. No service book, but as mentioned, extensive documentation is provided, along with two sets of keys.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts easily and runs well in both engine and drivetrain. The brakes engage smoothly and evenly. The parking light does not work, with the fault traced to the switch in the engine bay. The windshield wipers work, though somewhat sluggishly.

  • Interior condition:

The interior is in a charming original condition. The painted surfaces in the cabin have a nice patina. The original upholstery is in good condition. The rear seat cushion has a bullet hole from a rifle that, at some point long ago, was not secured.

  • Exterior condition:

Older paintwork in good condition. Small touch-up behind the right rear wheel. Chrome trim is nice and shiny. The underside appears to be in good condition considering the car’s age. Rustproofed.

  • General condition:

A road-ready Volvo PV 444 in good, well-cared-for condition. See the pictures. Perfect for someone who doesn’t want to spend countless hours in the garage.

Facts about the model

The Volvo PV 444 was premiered at Volvo’s exhibition in the Royal Tennis Hall on September 1, 1944. Many anticipated that World War II would soon be over, and Volvo wanted to be ready once peace arrived. However, it wasn’t until early 1947 that deliveries of the car could actually begin. Numerous obstacles and delays arose, not least shortages of raw materials during and after the war.

It is well documented that Volvo initially sold the car at a loss, since many orders had been placed at the 1944 introductory price, which soon proved to be set too low. Nevertheless, the wheels started turning and the 444 began appearing on the roads. And not only in Sweden—Volvo’s new family car also boosted exports, primarily to neighboring countries but eventually also to Europe, the U.S., and other parts of the world.

In total, 196,005 units were built before production ended. Meanwhile, the new Amazon went on sale in 1957, and the following year the 444 was upgraded into the PV 544.
