"A stylish cabriolet that charms the driver with the distinctive sound of Saab’s turbo engines. Inspected and fully drivable, it is a car that could be improved aesthetically with just a little effort."

Description

Swedish-sold Saab 900 Turbo 16 Cabriolet. The current owner has had it since 2022, and the previous owner kept the car for 20 years. The mileage, 13,400, is relatively low considering the Saab’s age. It passed inspection in July and will not need to be inspected again until July 2027.

Mechanically, nothing requires attention at present. With relatively small efforts, the appearance could be further enhanced – perhaps with a professional detailing and some minor repairs to the bumpers. A fully stamped service book is included, along with two sets of keys.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts and runs just as well as a turbocharged Saab 900 should. At higher revs, a slight vibration from the engine can be noticed. The air conditioning is working. The cruise control is out of order. The radio works and cassette tapes can be played, but since the power antenna is broken, radio reception is not available.

  • Interior condition:

Smart-looking leather upholstery refurbished by ColorGlo. The carpets have aged well. The driver’s door panel has some minor damage, as does the side panel behind it. One of the rear speaker grilles is missing its cover. The dashboard has a couple of cracks. The trunk upholstery is in good condition, though the lower storage compartment could use a cleaning.

  • Exterior condition:

The soft top fabric is in good condition and was newly replaced in 2024. The work was professionally carried out by the well-renowned Bil & Marintextil in Linköping. A soft top cover is included with the car.

The paint and body are generally in fine condition, though some minor rust spots are present in a few areas, mainly along the lower edges of the doors. Both bumpers show heavy scratching and are in poor cosmetic condition, with the rear bumper also missing a trim piece. The right rear taillight has a small crack. As on many other Saabs, the rear emblem has lost its color, and some rust spotting can be found along the seams inside the trunk lid.

  • General condition:

Saab Cabriolet in good working condition, mechanically sound and recently treated to major improvements including a new soft top and refurbished leather upholstery.

Facts about the model

At the Frankfurt Motor Show in the autumn of 1983, Saab unveiled a pearlescent white cabriolet. Production didn’t begin until 1986, in Nystad, Finland, with a limited series planned of just 400 cars exclusively for the U.S. market. For the 1987 model year, the cabriolet was offered across all Saab markets, and demand in Sweden was so high that by the autumn of 1986, orders were being placed for cars not scheduled for delivery until 1989.

Compared with a standard Saab 900, the convertible featured 300 unique components. Reinforcements included extra sill beams and a crossmember under the rear seat. The windshield frame was heavily strengthened and reclined an additional 10 cm. The soft top was constructed of three layers of fabric.

The cabriolet became an extremely profitable project for Saab – only 2,500 units over three years were required to reach break-even. By the time production ended in the autumn of 1993, a total of 48,880 examples had been built.
