"Rarely have I experienced so many positive comments from people around as when we inspected this car. The color, design, details, and aura are perceived as something truly special. The condition—exterior, interior, mechanical, and performance—is in fine balance. It has been driven sparingly in recent years. As always with a classic, there are details to look after, but here most things seem to be in good shape."

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts easily and runs smoothly in both engine and drivetrain. During a short test drive in suburban traffic, everything felt as it should—steering, automatic transmission, brakes, etc. all function well. When accelerating, the power is clearly there. After the steering box was replaced, the wheel alignment still needs final adjustment, as the steering wheel sits slightly off-center. When the current owner went to replace the air filter, he was only able to source two new ones.

Not inspected on a lift, but from what could be seen, the vital components appeared to be in good condition.

  • Interior condition:

Complete and well-preserved interior in the premium version of its time. Door panels, trim, headliner, and carpets are in fine condition. Extra protective mats with Pontiac logo. Steering wheel, controls, instruments, dashboard, and gauges are all in good condition. All electrical functions and gauges work properly. The A/C is operational but needs to be refilled once a year.

  • Exterior condition:

Straight and clean bodywork with a glossy, equally fine paint finish. Chrome, trim, glass, emblems, and lighting details are in good condition. Wheels and tires also in fine shape.

  • General condition:

After the fin explosion of the late 1950s came the somewhat more restrained yet elegantly beautiful cars of the early 1960s. At this point, American manufacturers were beginning to approach European premium cars in terms of both equipment and performance. The 1962 Pontiac Grand Prix is one of the more sleekly designed and well-proportioned cars of this era. Its design, condition, and performance make this car an appealing and distinguished classic and enthusiast vehicle.

Facts about the model

Pontiac, named after a Native American chief, became a brand within General Motors in 1926. Over the years, Pontiac came to be regarded as a mid-class car—positioned above Chevrolet but below Buick and Oldsmobile. In 2009 GM decided to discontinue the brand, making that the last production year for Pontiac—or perhaps just the most recent one, since anything can happen.

In any case, by the late 1950s Pontiac had begun to establish itself as a performance-oriented marque, starting with the Bonneville in 1957. This was later followed by the GTO and Firebird. For the 1964 model year, Pontiac dropped a 389 engine from the larger Bonneville into the smaller Le Mans/Tempest body and called the package GTO—a move that is often seen as the starting point of the muscle car era.

The Grand Prix model was introduced for 1962 as a “full-size personal luxury car” in coupe form—a luxury vehicle with extra flair, aimed at challenging European premium cars on home turf. It came equipped with the robust 6.4-liter, 389 cui engine, often paired with a 3-speed Hydra-Matic automatic transmission. Three- and four-speed manual gearboxes were also available. The Pontiac Grand Prix, in various forms, remained in production all the way until 2008.
