"A slightly more modern and powerful Volvo 1800 with fuel injection."

Description

This car was reportedly owned by the Argentine Embassy in Stockholm. The current owner has had the car since 1979. The Volvo has been restored, with new front fenders among the improvements. The sills were replaced due to rust. The engine, an injected B20, has been fitted with a new camshaft, and the fuel pump has also been replaced. Hi-jackers with a compressor were installed. Following a minor collision, the grille was replaced, and some bodywork was straightened at a Volvo shop in Uppsala. Around the year 2000, the car was repainted in its original metallic blue color. The side moldings were removed, and the clip holes were filled in.

The Volvo has been well-maintained and carefully looked after over the years. It has been driven sparingly during the current ownership. The owner has used the car for commuting to work occasionally and for a few holiday trips, with the longest journey being a drive to England. It has also been used for trips to and from vintage car meets at Ulva Kvarn near Uppsala. During the current owner’s time, the Volvo has always been stored in a garage.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The car now runs well in both the engine and drivetrain after startup, but it may need a thorough inspection since it has been stationary since 2005. The engine bay is clean and tidy, and it has a new battery.

  • Interior condition:

The interior is generally in good condition with some wear, as seen in the photos. The headliner is intact and clean. Both the dashboard and the trunk area are in good condition. Overall, the interior remains in good shape despite some minor signs of wear.

  • Exterior condition:

Older repaint in good condition. The chrome work is also in good shape. However, the lower chrome trim on the left rear side window does not sit flush against the body, as shown in the photo. The rubber seals are in good condition.

  • General condition:

A 1800 ES that has been stationary for a long time (since 2005) but remains in good condition. After a thorough inspection and some attention, this should become a very enjoyable enthusiast car to use.

Facts about the model

The Volvo 1800 ES was introduced as a way for Volvo to extend the life of the 1800 model, which had been in production since 1961 with minimal changes. The solution was to redesign the car from the rear seat and back, turning it into a “shooting brake,” a term for a two-door car designed for hunting. The result was a spacious and practical luggage compartment, accessible through a glass tailgate. Both the hinges and handle were integrated directly into the glass, which made some owners a bit nervous—but it was a solution that worked perfectly.

The 1800 ES was only produced for two model years, 1972 and 1973, with a total of 8,077 units. Production ceased because the cost to meet increasingly stringent U.S. safety regulations became too high. Since the U.S. was the primary market for the car, with around 90 percent of the ES models exported there, Volvo decided to discontinue the model.
