"Here, you get a nice car with all-wheel drive and a strong, reliable engine. Everything appears to be in good original condition, but there is some rust in the body that needs attention. With that said, this is an honest car where 'what you see is what you get."

Description

This vehicle was retired from the Stockholm Fire Department in September 1987 and used as an additional resource and transport vehicle. It's a Syncro with four-wheel drive (Steyr-Puch) and a 2.1-liter water-cooled engine with electronic fuel injection producing about 112 horsepower. The current owner acquired the vehicle from the Fire Department in March 2008. He has owned the car since then, but has had it registered partially under a colleague's name, his company, and now back under his own name. When the car was acquired from the Fire Department, it had approximately 85 000 km on the odometer, and the current mileage is 92 480 km.

The car comes equipped with a towing hitch (triplex), a front light bar, interior map reading lights, and a backup signal from its time in the Fire Department.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The car starts easily and runs smoothly. During test drives, it feels tight and well-maintained, with everything such as the clutch, gearbox, steering, brakes, etc., appearing to work well. However, the transition from 70/30 to 50/50 four-wheel drive function is uncertain; there is a clicking sound in the relay, suggesting that there may be a poor electrical connection between the relay and the components.

  • Interior condition:

An interior completely in its original condition, which is intact and clean. Seat covers were used on the seats and rear seat during its time with the Fire Department. At the radio outlet, there was likely a communication unit, as the outlet appears to have been slightly modified.

  • Exterior condition:

Original paint that is matte and shows signs of rust and wear in certain areas. The bed and storage compartments underneath are in good condition. The original Syncro wheels are in good shape and equipped with quality tires.

  • General condition:

A VW Transporter Syncro in untouched original condition with low mileage and few owners is exceptionally rare and well worth preserving. Whether it's to be used as a utility vehicle or an enthusiast's car, it's a classic with collector's potential.

Facts about the model

After VW resumed car production following World War II, it didn't take long for them to introduce a utility vehicle, the Type 2 or Transporter. The demand was immense, and they sold everything they could produce. After the iconic T1 model, which was manufactured from 1950 to 1967, came the updated T2, produced as the model year 1968-1979.

Its successor, the T3, debuted as the model year 1980 and stayed in production until 1992, with approximately 1.75 million units built. The Transporter Type 3 came in various versions with different specifications depending on the model year and market. Single-cab with a flatbed, double-cab with a flatbed, transport versions in a multitude of configurations, not to mention bus and camper variants. It featured air-cooled and water-cooled engines, carbureted and fuel-injected options, front-wheel drive, and four-wheel drive (Syncro). Regardless of the configuration, it was a sturdy and reliable companion for all sorts of transportation needs.
