"Many owners domestically and an unknown history prior to import, but also the kind of typically Italian driving joy with plenty of engine character."

Description

According to documentation and records, it was delivered new in November 1999 in a European country within the EU, but one that is no longer an EU member today. The car is equipped with a miles odometer, and the delivery country is likely the United Kingdom, despite the fact that it is actually left-hand drive. It was registered for road use in Sweden in 2006 at 119,730 miles (just over 192,600 km) and has since had a large number of owners, most for shorter periods except one of the early ones. Perhaps the car was personal import goods belonging to a Swede who intentionally ordered a left-hand-drive car for later import after a few intense years of use. If the mileage is accurate, the car has covered 45,500 km since arriving in Sweden, and the total mileage now stands at 147,993 miles, which translates to just over 238,000 km. The most recent approved inspection was carried out on 2018-01-19.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The engine is a direct descendant of the rally legend Lancia Delta Integrale. Lively and eager in both engine and gearbox, and the chassis also feels good during a short test drive around the area. The car leaks a bit of oil from the engine/gearbox area; the exact source is uncertain—more information to come.

  • Interior condition:

The driver’s seat has a few split seams, and the entire leather interior would benefit from cleaning and conditioning. Otherwise, the door panels, dashboard with steering wheel, and headliner are in good condition.

  • Exterior condition:

A presentable exterior aside from an obvious and clearly visible damage on the front bumper. The damaged piece is in the luggage compartment. Aftermarket wheels from Borbet with some scuff marks, fitted with newer budget tires from 2019, approved for winter use. Photos of the underside will follow.

  • General condition:

Good value potential and plenty of enjoyment for a new owner who isn’t too concerned about the lack of early history.

Facts about the model

Fiat Coupé made headlines in automotive magazines in 1992, after several spy photos were taken that revealed the car during testing. Fiat had decided to produce a new coupé based on the old Tipo platform when the Pininfarina factory suddenly shut down following the failure of the Cadillac Allanté project around 1990. Two design proposals were put forward, with Fiat’s internal Centro Stile team competing against Pininfarina. The concept presented by Centro Stile’s Chris Bangle (later of BMW) unexpectedly won the support of Fiat’s management. The design previously offered by Pininfarina was eventually accepted by Peugeot, where it became the 406 Coupé.

At its launch in January 1994, the Fiat Coupé was available with a four-cylinder 2.0-liter 16V engine, in both turbo (190 hp) and non-turbo (139 hp) versions. Both engines were later versions of Fiat’s twin-cam engine, also used in the Lancia Delta Integrale—the car that won the WRC Group A six times in a row. In 1996, a 1.8-liter 16V engine (131 hp) was introduced alongside a 2.0-liter five-cylinder 20V (147 hp) and a five-cylinder 2.0-liter 20V turbo (220 hp). Along with the new engines, Fiat also made some minor design changes, including the grille, steering wheel, leather door panels, center console, and the replacement of the digital clock with an analog one. The versions with turbo engines were also equipped with an effective viscous differential (VFD, marked on the valve cover of the auction car) to counteract the understeer that plagues most high-powered front-wheel-drive cars.
