"Superb car, which is a joy to drive. It doesn’t get much better than this..."

Description

The car was sold new in Blekinge in August 1975 and had two owners there until 2006, when it became a hobby car. It was driven during the summer months until 2010, when it was put into storage. The current owner purchased the car in 2021, started it up, serviced it, and drove it to the vehicle inspection station before deciding to restore it.

The car was in excellent, untouched original condition, though the original red paint had faded slightly. The car was handed over to a renowned VW/Porsche restorer and disassembled. This process was smooth as the car was nearly free of significant rust damage. It underwent a professional full repaint, with the highest quality and results. During reassembly, it received new window and rubber seals, new running boards, bumpers, chrome trim, lights, and more. The car now looks brand new on the outside, down to the finest details.

The interior is also in excellent condition. The seats, carpets, door panels, and headliner are completely original and in top condition. It’s evident that the car has only been driven 160,000 kilometers by careful owners. It has never been fitted with a radio, so the dashboard and door panels remain untouched. During the restoration, the engine was removed and thoroughly inspected. The heat exchangers and exhaust system were replaced, as were gaskets, covers, belts, and all ignition components. The braking system was also restored. (The total investment exceeded 200,000 SEK.) The car starts easily and runs smoothly in terms of engine, gearbox, and brakes.

After being driven during the summer of 2022, Volkswagen in Gothenburg requested to borrow the car to add a retro feel to the introduction of the new VW Buzz. This Beetle was intended to be a display car for two months but ended up being showcased for two years due to its popularity with both customers and staff.

In the meantime, the owner restored another 1975 1303 in a different color and has now decided to sell this one to a VW enthusiast looking for a car in top condition.

Facts about the model

The final model years are particularly enjoyable to drive because they are equipped with rack-and-pinion steering (earlier models used a worm-and-sector steering box). This steering system, introduced alongside a series of other improvements in the fall of 1974 (to align with the launch of the VW Golf), gave the Beetle its best and most refined configuration. However, production ceased in July 1975 to free up manufacturing capacity for the Golf, which had quickly become a sales success.

For this reason, the 1975 model year is considered the best version of the Beetle and is particularly sought after, as relatively few units were produced and sold in Sweden, with even fewer in Germany.

After 1975, a simpler version of the Beetle continued to be produced in Germany until 1978. This was the significantly more basic "economy Beetle model" with a 1200cc engine, flat windshield, and the older body and chassis design. In Mexico, this simpler model was produced all the way until 2003. A total of 25 million Beetles were manufactured.

The Volkswagen 1303S from 1975, with rack-and-pinion steering, represents the pinnacle of development since the model's inception in 1937 and was produced exclusively in Germany.
