"The car needs a bit of care and attention."

Description

The current owner’s father bought the car in 1963; at that time it had had a single owner since it was built in 1959. Since the family bought it, receipts have been saved and virtually every refuelling has been documented. Every summer the family travelled on holiday to the Torne Valley, and they also took the car on trips to the Netherlands and England.

At some point in the 1980s the car underwent rust repairs and was repainted. Aluminium inner fenders were fabricated to reduce the risk of new rust, and a stainless-steel exhaust system was made—which is still in place today. Over time the headliner became unsightly, so the owner sewed the headliner that is still in the car. He also installed retractable seat belts for extra safety. A minor collision was repaired at Philipsson’s.

The current owner naturally practised driving in the Mercedes when he got his licence in 1984. In the mid-1980s a newer car was purchased, and the Mercedes was mostly left standing in a heated garage. The family also bought a parts car which donated many of the spare parts included with the vehicle.

In 1995 the current owner took over the family heirloom, and since then he has driven it only about 5,000 km. The fuel pump and radiator were refurbished a few years ago, and in 2025 the brake shoes, wheel cylinders, master cylinder, and carburettor were rebuilt.

Included with the Mercedes are several boxes of spare parts, documentation consisting of receipts and inspection records (see photos), and three sets of keys.

Facts about the model

The Mercedes-Benz 219 was produced between 1956 and 1959 in just under 28,000 units. You could describe it as a mix between the more luxurious 220 and the simpler 180. The 219 has the six-cylinder 220 engine but with only a single carburettor. From the windscreen and back, it follows the design of the simpler four-cylinder 180.
