"A skillfully executed renovation that has held up very well over the years. The car runs excellently but requires some getting used to when shifting gears."

Description

This car underwent a skilled full restoration 15 years ago and has remained in excellent condition over the years. The current owner purchased it in 2016 and has driven it sparingly during the summer months. He has exhibited it a few times, notably winning the People’s Choice award among thousands of cars at the Nostalgia Festival in Ronneby.
Today, the 23-window model from 1964 is one of the most sought-after vehicles from Volkswagen's classic range. These buses can reach high prices at auctions, especially when in good condition and featuring the coveted two-tone paint. Well-restored examples can sell for several hundred thousand dollars, with a strong enthusiast market for those driven on the roads and displayed at vintage car shows.

Facts about the model

Volkswagen Type 2, also known as the VW "Bulli" or "Microbus," is an iconic minibus and a symbol of 1960s counterculture and freedom. A particularly rare model is the 23-window luxury bus, often referred to as the "Samba Bus." This model quickly became a favorite among surfers, hippies, and families needing a spacious and reliable vehicle for vacations. The specific 1964 model with 23 windows has an intriguing history.

Design and Features
The VW 23-window luxury bus was introduced as a premium variant of the Type 2 series, primarily intended as a tourist bus. It featured 23 windows, including skylight windows along the roofline and a sunroof. These numerous windows offered passengers excellent views and a bright, airy feel, which was much appreciated during summer road trips and outings.
The bus was also unusually well-equipped for its time, featuring split rear doors and an optional two-tone paint scheme, which added a touch of elegance. The luxury model also allowed for various interior customizations and specially designed seats, enhancing its appeal to more affluent buyers.

1964 – A Special Year
1964 marked the final production year of the 23-window model, as subsequent models were updated to include 21 windows. This makes the 1964 23-window model especially sought-after by collectors. During this period, performance was also improved, with the 1964 model featuring a 1.5-liter flat-four engine producing around 42 horsepower, an upgrade from previous years.

Demand and Collectibility
Today, the 23-window model from 1964 is among the most coveted vehicles in Volkswagen’s classic lineup. These buses can fetch high prices at auctions, especially if they are in good condition and sport the highly desirable two-tone paintwork. Well-restored examples can sell for several hundred thousand dollars, supported by a strong enthusiast market for those used both on the road and at vintage car shows.

Symbolism and Cultural Heritage
The VW bus, particularly the 23-window model, embodies a sense of freedom closely tied to 1960s youth culture. Its iconic silhouette and association with road trips and adventure have made it a cultural phenomenon, symbolizing a nostalgic sense of liberation.
The Samba Bus’s cult status remains alive, making it a prized possession in the collector’s market. Owning a 23-window VW bus from 1964 is not just about possessing a classic vehicle; it is about being part of its history and symbolism.
