Description

The special edition "Luxus," introduced in the 1975 model year, featured plush upholstery, velour carpets, a rear center armrest, wood details on the door sides and around the ashtray, and a wooden gear shift knob. This vehicle was registered for road use on September 17, 1974, and has had few owners. It was acquired in April 1985 by a man who gifted the car to his son in June of the same year. In February 1987, the car was taken off the road until March 1989, when it was taken over by another son and brother. He owned it until this year, when the former owner and brother once again became the owner of the car. The car has been owned by the same family since 1985 and has been off the road since 1987. It is now operational and has been inspected prior to sale. During the startup, the engine top was renovated with a change of pistons, etc. Additionally, a new water pump was installed along with replacements of various hoses, gaskets, oils, filters, etc. The brakes have been checked and repaired, and all functions and the electrical system have been reviewed and are now working. The odometer reads 8,574 kilometers, though it is uncertain whether it has rolled over. Interior details, various clips, and seals have been reviewed, and parts have been sourced from a specialty firm in England. The car is equipped with a tow hook. Included with the car are the owner's manual and service booklet, various receipts and documents, duplicate keys, rims with winter tires, and miscellaneous small items including color pencils, spray paint, and clear coat.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts easily and runs well in engine and drivetrain. During a short test drive in urban traffic, steering, clutch, shifting, and road handling details were found to be in good condition. Not checked on a lift, but vital parts looked good, and the inspection had no other remarks regarding the undercarriage.

  • Interior condition:

Nice and luxurious interior that is in a good original condition. The car has had a custom-made seat cover. The passenger seat and driver's backrest were carefully removed, and appeared to be relatively well-preserved. Wear at the top of the driver's side backrest. Nice door panels and panels, fine headliner and carpets that differ in color (age?). Protective mats, both newer and older rubber ones, are included. All electrical functions as well as heating and ventilation seem to work well. The clock's function is uncertain.

  • Exterior condition:

The car has been repainted, either partially or fully, but this was done before the current owning family acquired it in 1984. It's unclear why it was repainted. The paint is in good condition, though there is wear from usage and variations in tint. There's a scratch on the trunk, a few dents, and scuffs, but otherwise normal wear for its age. Around the wheel arches, edges, and rocker panels, there are areas that may need attention. The chrome and shiny parts are in good condition with some wear. The bumpers are not perfectly aligned. The driver's side rearview mirror is damaged, and the antenna on the A-pillar is missing. Good glass and lighting details, headlamp wipers have been removed. Good rims with good tires, different brands on the front (new) and back. Engine and trunk spaces are in good condition for their age.

  • General condition:

It is often said that a car model is at its most aesthetically pleasing at the beginning of its production years and at its best in terms of driving and quality as it ends production. Considering the history of this model, here you get both. This particular example, with its classic '02 look and the special, high-end version from the last year of production, along with its history and road-ready condition, makes it a fine and interesting classic and enthusiast vehicle.

Facts about the model

After getting production up and running post-World War II, BMW offered a wild array of motorcycles, small cars, large luxury vehicles, and sports cars. In the early '60s, they began to streamline their lineup, and the Neue Klasse, a larger midsize car with a sleek and spacious body featuring modern design, became a success. By the mid-1960s, BMW realized the need for a slightly smaller car to meet the demands of the growing middle class. From their successful Neue Klasse, they developed a new model, initially equipped with the 1600 engine from the larger car but with two doors, simply called the 1600-2. The rest is history and a success story. Over time, the '2' was incorporated into the model designation, and the cars were named 1502, 1602, 1802, and 2002 according to engine power. Various epithets and letters were attached depending on the equipment. Two-door cars, convertible versions, a two-door Touring, and the icing on the cake, a turbocharged version was launched in 1973. The 02 series was produced until 1977 with minor cosmetic upgrades. Into the 1970s, the model, like many other cars, featured less chrome and more matte black details. For the 1974 model year, the round tail lights were replaced by larger and more modern rectangular fixtures. Regardless of the engine configuration, it was a lively and fun-to-drive car with excellent handling properties. Thus, it was favored by drivers with sporting ambitions, as well as by the racing community. The last two model years offered only the simpler 1502 version as a budget alternative to the new 3 Series introduced in 1975. In total, 868,000 02s were manufactured from 1966 to 1977.
