"Sleek, confident in its lines, and handsome, with a touch of stylish French sixties vanity. Together with the convertible version, the coupe has a softer basic shape than its everyday siblings, the 404 Berline and Break."

Description

It was registered for road use in November 1964 by the general agent AB Gjestvang & Co, but was not delivered to its first owner, a Jan Bergh in Sala, until April 8, 1967, with an odometer reading of 3,400 km and thus also a 6-month warranty. Whether the car was a demonstrator or had another owner during that time is uncertain. What is certain is that automobile repairman Bergh did a lot of work on his 404 Coupé. The column shift lever was converted to a floor shift, and in addition a floor heating element, master switch, gasoline heater, and high-powered horn were installed, and the battery was relocated to the trunk. The current owner actually bought the car as a challenge, simply to get it running again after more than 40 years of standing still. After disassembly and dissection of the mechanical fuel injection, all cylinders sprang to life and the engine sounds healthy. The thermostat was boiled and cleaned, and the temperature has remained stable during all test drives. The last passed inspection was carried out on 1984-04-19. The brakes were in fine condition despite the long period of inactivity, and the brake fluid is the same since the last service, which is said to have been performed in that very year, 1984.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

After the current owner disassembled the Kugelfischer fuel injection, cleaned and lubricated it, the engine runs as it should. The gearbox and clutch, together with the Nardi floor shift conversion in place of the original column shift lever, also feel right, even if the conversion was probably hotter then than it is today. The thermostat was completely corroded and has been cleaned in hot water. The bimetal has regained its feel and the temperature is stable. The fuel tank was removed and drained at the time of purchase, and thanks to that it has remained completely free from internal corrosion.

  • Interior condition

The front seats, headliner, and door panels are in good condition, slightly soiled on the left side with an open seam on the right door handle. The rear seat has small old spots and damage from some liquid, hard to say what happened. Slightly soiled side panels. The foam rubber parts in the dashboard and trim have dried out and crumble to the touch. Whether the additionally installed Monark 6000 liquid-filled floor heaters work is unclear; we did not try opening the valve control down on the driver's side floor.

  • Exterior condition

Repainted at some point, likely in the seventies. One headlight has a poor reflector and the other needs a new bulb. Old mismatched tires that nevertheless hold air. A fun find: the old license plate underneath the current one. The undercarriage has surface rust here and there, but the sheet metal is sound.

  • General condition

Exciting condition and history, a car ready to take the next step with. The obvious tasks with the headlights before inspection, and then onward with the interior, a check of car repairman Bergh's various extra fixes, and a general reconditioning. And everything else that comes up. But as said, it is fun and good-looking with great potential and possibilities.

Facts about the model

The 404 Coupé and Cabriolet models were manufactured by Peugeot in France and Pininfarina in Italy. Floor pans with firewall, intended for the 404 Berline, were taken off the assembly line at the factories in Sochaux and sent by rail to Turin. There, the body was built and painted, and glass, chrome, stainless steel trim and interior were fitted. Much of this was done by hand. The cars then returned to Sochaux for installation of the engine and drivetrain, front and rear suspension, and other mechanical components, as well as final delivery adjustments. The 1.6-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine was fitted to all versions of the 404. It was available with a conventional carburetor, but also with mechanical fuel injection from Kugelfischer, in which case the model was named Injection. It was introduced with the 404 Cabriolet in 1962, and the following year it also appeared in the more luxurious Berline versions and, of course, in the coupe. For its time, it was an exclusive and technically exciting solution, with optimal air/fuel delivery to each cylinder. The engine, model year 1967, produced 88 hp DIN (96 hp SAE), providing fine performance with good torque and somewhat lower fuel consumption. During this period, Peugeot also proved that the Injection engine was fast and reliable, winning the Safari Rally three years in a row, 1966-1968. A total of 6,841 examples of the 404 Coupé were built in model years 1963-1968, of which 1,358 in model year 1967. Approximately 75 cars came to Sweden in model years 1964 - 1968. Of these, 30 cars remain, several of which are projects and donor cars, but around 10 are said to be drivable. Several coupe models have ended up as donor cars when a convertible was restored. The convertible model was built in model years 1962-1968 in 10,388 examples. In its day, a 404 Coupé Injection was the most expensive car in Peugeot's model lineup. The price tag in Sweden was nearly double that of a Berline, landing at just under 30,000 kronor.
