"Until 1939, these lightweights could be ridden without a driver's license and without registration, provided they were equipped with bicycle pedals, had a displacement under 100 cc, and weighed less than 45 kilos. This changed in 1939, after which registration and a motorcycle license were required. The lightweight offered here was purchased new by Crown forest ranger Skarin and remained in the family until 2004. We believe it can be brought back to running order by relatively simple means. In any case, this motorcycle is a historically and ethnologically significant vehicle."

Description

The motorcycle has been part of a collection of vehicles in Sorsele. The late car collector Mr. Hedman was a recognized and knowledgeable motor man and a passionate enthusiast who restored everything from motorcycles and tractors to cars. He worked as a caretaker for the municipality of Sorsele for almost 40 years and became a well-known motoring personality in the area. Bilweb Auctions has now been entrusted with selling the collection on behalf of the estate. Several of the vehicles are placed on jack stands, in order to prevent the tires from being damaged during long-term storage. The vehicles could therefore not be moved out for the photo session, and in some cases it was not possible to document the vehicles from all angles.

This small Husqvarna lightweight of 98 cc was purchased new in 1938 by Crown Forest Ranger Skarin, a resident of Sorsele. In 1957, the motorcycle was inherited by his daughter Eva-Britt. In 2004, it was acquired by the late collector Mr. Hedman. The motorcycle thus remained within the same family from new in 1938 until 2004.

No registration certificate has been preserved for the motorcycle, but there is a written account of its origin. See photo. The buyer will need to do further research via Riksarkivet (the Swedish National Archives) to determine whether a copy of the old registration certificate can be obtained. The motorcycle is therefore sold unregistered without identity documents.

This is a distance auction. The photos were taken by an independent photographer, and information about the vehicle and its technical condition, to the extent such information was available, has been obtained from the estate administrator. BWA has thus not inspected the vehicle on site at the seller's location.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Equipped with a 98 cc two-stroke engine. We do not know when it was last driven, and no attempts were made to start it at the time of photographing. We therefore do not know much about the vehicle's technical condition.

  • Exterior condition

The motorcycle appears to be completely in original condition, with large portions of the original paint remaining. Please examine the photos closely for more information.

  • General condition

A well-preserved small motorcycle of a model that was significant from an ethnological standpoint as Sweden's population began to become motorized.

Facts about the model

A 98 cc motorcycle has, since 1939, been legally classified as a light motorcycle in Sweden. You need at least an A1 driver's license (light motorcycle, max 125 cc) to ride it.

More on the background of the first owner's professional title:
Kronojägare (Crown Ranger) was the official professional title of the state-employed forest rangers who managed the forests and lands of the state (the "Crown").
When Crown Ranger Skarin bought his motorcycle in 1938, Domänverket was a very well-established, large, and influential organization in Sweden. During the 1930s in particular, the agency expanded considerably in northern Sweden. Due to the Depression, Domänverket was given government assignments to buy up and operate private sawmills and forest industries in order to preserve employment in times of crisis. Being a Crown Ranger employed by Domänverket in 1938 therefore meant working for one of the country's largest and most economically important state employers.
