"Studebaker's budget brand Erskine is a rare sight in Sweden today. According to statistics from Car.info, only eight Erskines remain in the Swedish vehicle registry. The car lacks registration documents and the old registration number is unknown, so it is sold without identity papers. In need of an overhaul and inspection before any attempt to start the engine."

Description

The car has been part of a collection of vehicles in Sorsele. The late car collector Mr. Hedman was a renowned and knowledgeable motor man and passionate enthusiast who restored everything from motorcycles and tractors to cars. He worked as a caretaker for the Sorsele municipality for almost 40 years and became a well-known motoring figure in the area. Bilweb Auctions has now been entrusted with selling the collection on behalf of the estate. Several of the vehicles are placed on jack stands, to prevent the tires from being damaged during long-term storage. The vehicles could therefore not be brought out for the photo session, and in some cases it has not been possible to document the vehicles from all angles. Expect the vehicles to need servicing and recommissioning to varying degrees.

This Erskine Model 50 four-door sedan from 1927 is one of the nearly 25,000 cars built during the marque's first year.
The late owner restored most of the car himself. Based on the date on a saved receipt, we conclude that the restoration began in the early 2000s and was completed a few years later. The car has dropped out of the vehicle registry and is therefore not registered. We have found a copy of an older Erskine registration certificate among the belongings left behind, but we are not certain that it belongs to this particular vehicle. The car is sold without identity documents for registration, and the buyer will need to do further research on their own. The car was most likely acquired in the local area, as that is the common denominator for all the vehicles in the collection.
This is a distance auction. The photos were taken by an independent photographer, and information about the vehicle and its technical condition, to the extent such information was available, has been obtained from the estate administrator. BWA has therefore not inspected the vehicle on site at the seller's location.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Equipped with a 2.4-liter straight-six flathead engine, manufactured by Continental Motors. The output was stated at 40 hp.

According to some sources, the engine, drivetrain, brakes, etc. have been gone through and are in order. We cannot guarantee that everything works technically on the car, but it is clear that a great deal of work has been put into the restoration. At the end of the photo series there are a few photographs showing what the car looked like before the restoration began. Seeing them, one realizes the enormous amount of work that has gone into the car. Since the car has been standing for a long time, one should be prepared for an inspection and overhaul being needed before attempting to start the car. We do not know when the car was last running, and no attempts to start it were made at the time of photography. No starter battery included.

  • Interior condition

Beautiful newly stitched upholstery in period style, done by the book. The owner sewed the upholstery himself and wore out two sewing machines before he was completely satisfied with the result.

  • Exterior condition

Restored and repainted in the early 2000s. Still looks good. The paintwork can be described as a well-executed home respray. Please examine the photos carefully for more information about the condition.

  • General condition

Restored pre-war automobile from a make that is very rare in Sweden. Identity documents for registration are missing.

Facts about the model

Studebaker launched the Erskine as a completely separate, standalone car brand with its own logos and emblems. The Erskine was intended as a more affordable complement to Studebaker; the cars were designed by Raymond Dietrich and sold between 1927 and 1930. According to Studebaker's original brochures from 1927, the small 6-cylinder engine producing 40 hp could take the car up to a top speed of around 95–100 km/h. It was also marketed as very fuel-efficient, consuming less than one liter per 10 km.
