"One of those good, everyday PVs that so many remember from their childhood, youth, and adult life. The PV of the dawning Swedish folkhem era."

Description

It was delivered to its first owner in June 1963. That owner may have kept it in regular use until the mid-seventies, when a new owner took over and continued using it for many years, until the early nineties. The next owner kept the car for almost 30 years, when a friend of the current owner bought the PV, and it eventually came to him in 2022. He is a Volvo enthusiast and collector, but now an Amazon wagon is to receive more of his attention. The most recent and final passed inspection was carried out on 2022-10-13. The odometer currently reads 353 km; the odometer has rolled over once and the total distance covered is in all likelihood 100,350 km.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The engine, gearbox, clutch, chassis, and brakes all feel normal, with that familiar, solid Volvo B18 character. The engine was rebuilt by a previous owner, and the current owner has replaced all brake components, while the carburetor has recently received a new gasket set including a new diaphragm.

  • Interior condition

New, intact, attractive, and clean interior in the classic red cloth and vinyl. Nice headliner, door panels, and above all, a preserved original carpet. The wrinkle finish on the instrument cluster has come loose in a couple of places.

  • Exterior condition

Attractive older repaint, with small bubbles in the sheet metal between the right rear door and fender. The car has been regularly rustproofed over the years. The chrome looks good from a distance, but there is minor pitting on the bumpers and grille. Nice newly manufactured bias-ply tires from 2021, period-correct and attractive in appearance, and they perform better than one might expect.

  • General condition

Sensible, handsome, and in just the right condition for summer use, as the car was used back in the day. There is not much documentation telling of the car's provenance and history, other than that the first three owners together have likely shared 59 years of its 64-year existence.

Facts about the model

When the PV 544 was introduced in 1958, it was a modernization of the classic PV 444, featuring, among other things, a one-piece, larger windshield, a larger rear window, and a more modern instrument cluster with the characteristic horizontal speedometer. Yet the big leap forward for the model came with the 1962 model year, when Volvo retired the old B16 engine and replaced it with the legendary B18 engine with a five-main-bearing crankshaft. The design gave the engine extreme structural stability, reduced vibrations, and minimized the risk of crankshaft flex under heavy load. This robust architecture – together with generously dimensioned bearing surfaces – is the primary explanation for the B18 engine's legendary durability and unique longevity. And furthermore, in combination with a modern 12-volt electrical system that replaced the old and weaker 6-volt system. A new, stylish B18 emblem was mounted on the trunk lid to show off the upgrade under the hood. The Volvo PV 544 was offered in several versions, from the simpler Favorit to the sportier Sport version with twin carburetors, and it also achieved international rally success.

Even though the more modern sibling model, the Amazon, had been on the market since 1956, the reliable and charming PV 544 remained deeply loved by Swedish car owners until production finally ended in October 1965.
