"Sometimes they turn up, the cars that simply happened to become well-kept classics without any original intention of being preserved for the future. The lady who bought this car truly loved her Saab. It was likely the only car she ever bought brand new. She drove and cared for it for more than 30 years. Bilweb Auctions is now selling this fine Saab on behalf of the heirs. The car needs a service overhaul, as it has hardly been driven since 2017, and an inspection at the Swedish vehicle inspection before being put back on the road."

Description

The car was registered on November 26, 1982. It then stood in the showroom window at the dealership in Piteå until April 11, 1983. That same day, the car was purchased by Mrs. Göta Vesterlund, who lived in the small village of Tvärån. Tvärån has one hundred inhabitants and is located approximately 40 km from Piteå. Mrs. Vesterlund needed a safe and dependable car, and this Saab 99 had exactly what she was looking for: a spacious interior, stable and steady road manners, and completely unbeatable performance on winter roads. And snow-covered roads were something Norrbotten County had plenty of during the winter months.
Mrs. Vesterlund worked at ASEA in Öjebyn, just outside Piteå, and commuted just over 60 km a day. At that time, roads in the Norrbotten interior were generally not salted, with the exception of the major E4 highway. This means that Mrs. Vesterlund's Saab 99 escaped death by road salt. In fact, the car is delightfully well preserved. When we saw the pictures of the car, we initially thought the odometer reading had been written down incorrectly. The current odometer reading is just under 277,000 km. Given the car's fine condition, we would have guessed a considerably shorter total distance. In 2015, after having owned and used her car for 32 years, Mrs. Vesterlund decided it was time to stop driving. She felt that if you had driven without a single mishap for that long, that was enough. Her daughter then took over the car. But the daughter's family had cars of their own and did not need another one. The Saab was essentially only driven when Mrs. Vesterlund needed a ride to the store. Since the Saab 99 was in such good and untouched condition, and had been bought new by her mother, the family decided to keep it as a collector car. The car has been serviced continuously throughout the years since new. Virtually all inspection reports since new have been saved. According to the family, the car has never been in an accident, nor has it ever needed rust repairs. The only touch-up painting done was on the inside of the driver's door lower edge, where the paint had worn away, so it was touched up there to prevent rust. Mrs. Vesterlund, you see, had a habit of kicking the snow off her shoes against the door at exactly that spot. Mrs. Vesterlund has now passed away, and the family wants the car to go to a Saab enthusiast who appreciates its untouched
condition. The last inspection was carried out in 2017, and since then the car has been kept off the road in the garage. In fact, the car has always been stored in a garage, according to the family. Included with the car are a spare wheel, jack, owner's manual, service records, and older inspection reports from the Swedish vehicle inspection authority.

This is a distance auction. Pictures and information about the vehicle and its technical condition have been obtained from the owner. BWA has thus not inspected the car in person at the seller's location.

Owner's comment

The car was bought new by my mother. The car has been driven on unsalted roads in Norrbotten. It has never been in a collision, and it was serviced before every inspection. The Saab 99 became a well-known feature of the village traffic scene. My mother was so short in stature that the local people would jokingly say it looked like the car was out driving on its own. She was very careful in traffic, and we don't believe she ever drove faster than 80 km/h. We hope the buyer is an enthusiast who can appreciate the car and take good care of it.
