"A charming Swedish luxury car classic."

Description

The current owner has had the car for five years. He bought it from a woman in Dalarna, who in turn had received it from her father. She had been listed as the owner since 2002 but barely used it—the car mostly sat in the garage. Her father had owned it since 1978, and according to her, it was his pride and joy. He devoted much time to polishing and caring for it. It was rarely driven in winter or rain and was carefully maintained over the years.

When the car came into the hands of the current owner, he carried out a thorough overhaul of the engine: seals, crank and main bearings, piston rings, and camshaft with lifters were all replaced. The cylinder head was refurbished and converted for unleaded fuel by Enebybergs Motor. He also fitted a stainless steel exhaust system from Raka Rör. In addition, he has refurbished the entire brake system as well as the suspension. All the work carried out is documented in a binder that comes with the car.

Last year, it passed inspection without remarks. The bodywork looks decent, and the interior is largely untouched, carrying a charming patina. There are some minor blemishes here and there, but overall the impression is of a time capsule from 1973. The car has mostly been used for leisurely drives by the owner.

No service book. The car comes with some documentation and two sets of keys.

Facts about the model

Volvo’s top model, the 164, was introduced in 1968 as the brand’s finest and most exclusive car, equipped with a six-cylinder engine producing 130 hp. From 1972, the same engine was also available with fuel injection, raising the output to 160 hp. The car also featured upgraded seats and interior, along with a more elegant and elongated front.

The 164 sold well on the important U.S. market, and when it was set to be replaced in autumn 1974 by the new Volvo 264 with a V6 engine, several U.S. dealers chose to order an additional 2,000 units of the 164E, built exclusively for the American market. These cars came fitted with the 240’s gearbox, dashboard, seats, insulation, fuel filler flap, and special 5.5-inch wheels with wide trim rings. Most were equipped with automatic transmission and sunroof.

Today, these cars are highly sought-after collector’s items, as the final ones sold in Sweden in 1974 were particularly prone to rust due to the switch at that time to more environmentally friendly paints and recycled sheet metal.
