"The color, overall appearance, and details of the car evoke a true 1950s atmosphere."

Description

The current owner bought the car from an estate in Vingåker in 1993. By then, it already had a fascinating history. It was assembled at GM’s assembly plant in Hammarbyhamnen, Stockholm, and then sold to a count at Sundbyholm, who owned it for nine months before it passed through the hands of a few other owners. Eventually, it ended up with a mechanic at the Oxelösund Ironworks. He took the car to heart and kept it for the rest of his life — until the current owner had the opportunity to buy it.

The Opel has never been deregistered; it has been on the road continuously since it was first put into service. The current owner used it sparingly until 1999, when he decided to carry out a full restoration. In late autumn that year, he drove it into the workshop, where the restoration took about three years. Everything was restored — both inside and out. The owner even had the interior upholstery newly manufactured according to the original design and had the car repainted in Nordic Metallic Blue.

The result was highly successful. The paint still looks fresh today, and the car has remained remarkably free from parking damage and other wear. Now, 23 years and just over 5,000 kilometers later, it still appears as a relatively fresh and well-preserved vehicle — a piece of living automotive history with an unusually unbroken life story.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts easily and runs smoothly in both engine and drivetrain. Column gear shifting works without issues, and functions such as clutch, steering, and brakes all performed well.

  • Interior condition:

The interior is in very good and well-maintained condition. The floor mats show some signs of age. The dashboard is in excellent condition. The headliner fabric isn’t perfect but doesn’t detract from the overall impression (see photos). The door seals are dry and show some cracking (see photos).

  • Exterior condition:

Shiny and well-kept paintwork, as are the chrome, glass, and other details. Wheels and tires are in good condition. The engine bay and trunk are also in good shape.

  • General condition:

It’s not often you see an Opel Kapitän in such fine condition on the roads today. Inspected and approved by the vehicle inspection authority, and therefore ready to drive.

Facts about the model

The Opel Kapitän with the classic ponton body style was introduced in 1953 and updated two years later with a new front design and a larger engine. At the same time, the more luxurious L version was added to the model range. The engine was Opel’s classic inline six-cylinder, 2.5-liter unit with a single carburetor, which gradually increased in power from 68 to 75 hp during the production period from 1953 to 1958. The Kapitän featured rear-wheel drive and a three-speed manual gearbox.
