"This is a rare car in Sweden. It would be a great addition to any car collection. Or why not use it, drive it to car meets, and show it off?

A contemporary of the Model T, it ranked second in U.S. sales statistics during the 1920s."

Description

This 1923 Willys-Overland was restored by the late renowned collector Ingemar Gustavsson, who resided at Kumla Gård in Hovsta, Örebro. Upon his passing in 2010, his entire estate, consisting of hundreds of vintage cars and motorcycles, was sold at a public auction.

The current owner purchased this Willys-Overland at the auction and transported it home to Värmland. (See separate image of the auction catalog.) A minor service was performed, and the car was started up. Since 2011, it has been barely driven and has been on display as an attraction at the owner’s car dealership in Kil.

The odometer reads 23,007 km, though it is difficult to determine the actual mileage on a restored 1920s car. Equipped with a master switch and an included fire extinguisher.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Inline-four engine with 24 horsepower and a three-speed gearbox. 6-volt electrical system. Scintilla ignition. Equipped with both crank start and electric start (starter motor).

The car was missing a starter battery at the time of photography, so we have not test-driven it. However, the owner guarantees that the car starts and runs.

  • Interior condition:

Stylish and well-crafted interior in faux leather. A stunningly beautiful wooden steering wheel.

The battery is located under the floor and can be accessed by removing the seat cushion and lifting the wooden cover beneath.

  • Exterior condition:

Nice older paintwork. There are some areas where the paint has developed small blisters, primarily on the top of the front fenders. See photos and video for details.

This does not detract from the car’s overall impression, which remains excellent. Equipped with the correct tires in outstanding condition—Firestone 30 x 3½ inches. The soft top is also in good condition.

  • General condition:

Good condition from an older restoration, carried out to a high standard of its time. Well-preserved with an authentic period-correct feel throughout.

Facts about the model

Businessman John N. Willys acquired the automobile manufacturer Overland in 1907. The following year, the company was renamed Willys-Overland Co. The simpler models retained the Overland name, while the more expensive cars were branded as Willys.

Starting in 1913, the company also produced cars with Charles Knight’s sleeve-valve engine under the name Willys-Knight. Willys further developed the sleeve-valve engine and secured multiple patents over the years.

The small and affordable Overland 4 was introduced to the market in late 1919. It featured a 4-cylinder side-valve engine producing 24 horsepower, paired with a three-speed manual transmission. The wheelbase measured 100 inches.

By mid-1922, with the introduction of the 1923 model year, the car received a visual update with the launch of Model 91. In 1926, Overland was replaced by the new Whippet brand.

Like many other automakers, Willys was hit hard by the Great Depression in the early 1930s. In 1932, the company was placed under receivership, and all production was halted.
