"Here you get a combination of the older Beetle but with a slightly more modern cut, from the mid-1960s. It is an enthusiast car that is simple and fun to own, maintain and use."

Description

This car was driven in western Götaland until 2014 when it was sold to an enthusiast in VW-heavy Örnsköldsvik. After that, we at Bilwebauctions sold it in the summer of 2020. It has continued to live a calm life as a hobby car, but the owner is now moving abroad, and the car is once again for sale through us at Bilwebauctions.

The car has been driven very little in recent years and has been stored in a garage. It is in good condition, with original patinated upholstery on the inside. The mileage shows 37 060 km, and most indications suggest that the odometer is on its second lap, thus 137 060 km. This also seems to be confirmed by the car's inspection history.

The current owner has had the car serviced and had repairs made, such as:

After purchase in the summer of 2020, the spark plugs, fan belt, and various hoses and gaskets were replaced.

In the spring of 2022, new gearbox oil was added, the carburetor was cleaned, electrical work was done, the front suspension was greased, the front brakes were lubricated, the rear wheel seal was replaced, the starter motor was checked and the solenoid was lubricated, and the fuel pump was inspected. The sheet metal was repaired, undercoated, and painted by the gas pedal.

Nice details like a sun visor in the rear window and hubcaps are included with the car.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts easily and runs smoothly in both the engine and gearbox. During a calm test drive, the car gives a pleasant and stable impression. During the latest inspection in May 2022, it was noted that the left inner tie rod was loose. There are two small rust spots, one near the battery towards the floor and one near the master brake cylinder. They should be examined and repaired. Otherwise, there are no visible damages, and the car has not been checked on a lift. The horn is operated via an extra button on the dashboard.

  • Interior condition:

Original upholstery in patinated condition but mainly intact and in good condition. The headliner has a couple of holes. Wear on the mat on the driver's side. Non-original floor mats.

  • Exterior condition:

Repainted about 20 years ago, a paint that is still in good condition, although with some small scratches and marks. There is also some "bubbling" and cracking on the left front side panel, towards the fender, which should be investigated. Chrome and glass in good condition, some small dents and scratches. New Michelin XZX tires in May 2021.

  • General condition:

A largely original vehicle that has been serviced and maintained well over the years. There are details to be addressed but on the whole, a comfortable and honest classic.

Facts about the model

There are countless articles and stories written about the history of the VW Type 1, our beloved Beetle. We have followed it from the beginning of the project in the 1930s, how British soldiers initiated the production after World War II, and how the first cars found their way to Sweden and Scania Vabis in 1948. Slowly but surely, it became a success here and around the world.
Every year, larger and/or smaller changes were made, but the model was constantly refined to meet technical and market demands. We fast forward to the model year 1965 and the object of this auction. That year, the windshield became slightly curved and larger, and the side and rear windows were made larger, resulting in better visibility and a brighter, more modern cabin. The seats became more comfortable but with thinner backs to provide more legroom for passengers in the rear. The brakes were improved, and several buttons and knobs were changed, including the hot air control, engine lid, and ventilation windows. A Beetle was constantly a slightly modernized retro car, and the model year 1965 had one foot in the past and one in the future, as they rushed out of the 1950s and into the 1970s.
According to reports, a total of 21,429,490 Type 1 cars were manufactured worldwide over 68 years.
