Description
The car feels solid and tight in the chassis and runs well. No squeaks or rattles from loose panels were noticed during the test drive. Equipment includes power steering, tachometer, overdrive operated via a button on the gear lever, front spoiler, and a special corduroy-like fabric interior. The original aluminum wheels are included but will need refurbishment to match the otherwise excellent condition of the car.
The engine block has been replaced with a B23 unit. The original B21 block is included, as is a rear axle believed to have originally come from this car but later replaced with one offering better gearing. The now very rare air pump for the space- and weight-saving spare tire is still present and hums along nicely when connected to the 12-volt socket.
Owner’s manual and service book are included, as well as the supplementary 242 GT manual and instructions for the air pump. A binder with various additional information is also included.
Not included in the auction: a 405 cylinder head with H camshaft, as well as the sought-after Volvo R-Sport instrument panel, which can be purchased separately from the seller.
Technical data
Condition
-
Mechanical condition
The car runs very well in both engine and drivetrain but can be a bit hard to start at times — a proper service should be able to sort this out. The left brake light has an intermittent connection, and the reverse light is not working. The temperature gauge shows a slightly high reading during normal driving; worth checking, although the seller has not experienced any actual overheating issues.
-
Interior condition
Good condition overall, with only a loose thread visible on the driver’s seat cushion and a detached speaker grille on the right door. The only real sign of the car’s mileage is that the front seatbelts are slightly fuzzy on the surface.
-
Exterior condition
Very good paintwork. There’s a light scratch on the left rear fender and one on a bumper. The tow hitch and its electrical connection are not installed.
-
General condition
A car in very good condition that could become even better with a service and a bit of attention to detail.

Facts about the model
The 242 GT was popular in the U.S. and Canada, where it continued to be sold as model years 1980 and 1981. In its final year — 1981 — buyers in those markets could also get the car in black with red exterior stripes, along with the Turbo’s wheels and front spoiler.
In Sweden, the 242 GT was considered too expensive — almost 30% pricier than a standard 242 DL (though still 20% cheaper than the 262 Bertone coupé, which had only 10 more horsepower from its six-cylinder engine). Today, the 242 GT is arguably the rarest and most sought-after of all Volvo 240 models among collectors.
